I am taking the engine out as after getting the inlet manifold off and fighting with the heads (which I lost) I figure it's easier. After a whole afternoon of searching I've found this link http://www.symatix.co.uk/300zx/EngineRemoval/EngineRemoval.htm but it doesn't work :headvswal

I have read leaving the autobox is easier and also servicing the tubs to at the same time but can't find a guide for the removal anywhere, any pointing in the right direction would be appreciated. If anyone in the Cardiff area has done this before and would like to help (quite happy to supply a fee and tea) then let me know. thanks

Just gone all thru this myself, and still havent got it back together properly, as i managed to boil it, maybe I will have to do the heads as well now, lol, what we did was take the exhausts off, then the propshaft, split the autobox and engine, dropped the autobox, then took the engine out of the top of the car, I left the aircon compressor (there was no gas in it anyhow) on the engine and the altenator, took off the power steering pump tho. obviously the rad and fan need to come off too but it was not too hard to do then. took us most of a weekend to do but I recon half that time was working out how to do it, doing it was not too bad.

when I had mine out I replaced turbos (that was what had blown on mine), cambelt, and all pully belts, all the little water hoses at the back of the engine, PCV valves and pipes and the heter matrix hoses, you dont wanna have to pull the engine to do any of these.

I am far far from an expert (evidence is that my car is back on the ramps in bits) but any help i can be give me a shout

Cheers

Thanks Brian, I know the box ix is held onto the engine with bolts but how many and were they easy to get at?

couldent be sure exactly how many its fairly obvious tho, to get to the top ones I undid the gearbox mounting and let the box and engine tilt towards the back a bit, then with a huge extension bar you can get on the reasonably.

before that you will need to undo the tourqe converter, now this is not obvious, take of the starter motor, then there are 2 brackets which hold the bottom of the tranny onto the engine (called the gusset or girdle I believe in the manual) the bottom plate will then come off the box and give you access to the touque converter, there are 4 short bolts which hold this on, you will have to turn the engine (27mm socket on front pully) to get to them all but once you have all 4 out you are ready to split the engine and box

Is the propshaft obvious? Sorry about all the questions but it's the 1st Z I've worked on!!

I left my gearbox in place , getting to the bolts was a bit awkward but i was removing the EGR crap off the back of the engine so re-fitting was made easier , also left the aircon pump connected , unbolt it off the engine and manouver it up and out of the way , same with power steering pump , just leave it on it,s pipes.

You just have to get these back in place as your lowering the engine back in , saved alot of hassle this way .

yeah prop shaft is easy 4 x bolts on the aft end and a sliding spline on the gearbox end the centre bearing is held on with a braket, again very easy to take off, i believe you can leave box in but i would think it would be a bugger to get to the bell housing bolts, probably possable none the less

Brian

leave the box in! its easy you undo the bolts reachable basicaly everything from 6 oclock around to 9 o clock

when engine hoist is connected and crossmember dropped you can then get to the bolts around the top with a long 14mm spanner

done! (gordon ramsey style)

Exhausts off now, just wanted to check the prop, is it the join with the 4 bolts which was above where the centre sect exhaust joined the front section? Also I assume when the starter motor comes off I will see the 2 brackets which hold the bottom of the tranny onto the engine?

Thanks

Anyone able to confirm?

to seperate the prop, undo all 4 bolts with handbrake on for ease so it dont move around.

mark with tipex on both joints before you split, then finally undo the 2 17mm bolts, making sure when you refit the spacer washers go back on above the bracket otherwise you prop will turn like a bananna

you dont need to remove brackets, there are 2 14mm bolts to each bracket going through bellhousing, once these are removed you can split the box

if you have an auto you will need to remove one of these brackets to gain acsess to the torque convertor bolts
