When i come to a stop at traffic lights for example, the car stalls unless i slowly roll to a stop or put it in neutral before stopping (its auto by the way).

Does this mean the gearbox is on its way out? because im assuming its staying in too high gear thus stalling it.

Ive noticied lately that it keeps going into 'power mode' when it feels like it to, i have to switch it into 'hold mode' then back to 'normal 'for it to come out of 'powermode'.

please help

nah mine did it and it was temp sensor!!

mines not an auto though!

the staying in powermode is probably a slightly heavy foot.

As to stalling after stopping... if your someone who screams up to lights and then anchors on then they do stall from time to time. Mine has once or twice, after doing an emergency stop.

Does it tick over okay? Lumpy? or smooth? What sort of rpm when nice and warm?

Im not heavy on the foot, and nor do i stop fast - the power mode just comes on and off when it feels like it, and im talking about a normal stop- the only way for it not to stall is very slowly roll to a stop or pop it in neutral :(

Its started doing this ever since i had the cambelt, tensioners, pullys and water pump done (in one go)- it was done by a place near me that does mainly jap motors. ive given it back to them to sort out once and they said they dont see that its anything theyve done, but they changed some O rings to see if it had anything to do with that- but it didnt- he did say to me my gearbox seems a little worn though.

just getting the obvious out of the way :)

If im right in my understanding of an auto gear box, it shouldnt really matter what gear its in when its stops because there is no mechanical link it should just slip, as long as its not stuck in lockup!

I say that because on the old BMW 750i, they had a limp home mode in which the gearbox would only use 3rd gear, so therefore it started and stopped in that gear...

Check the gearbox oil level/condition perhaps?

Sorry, forgot to mention they said they put some oil in gear box when they had it back in.

i guess im taking the word of the guys that claimed they did it- so mabye i should check myself, how do i check the gearbox oil please :) ?

Engine up to temp, leave running and in Neutral then check on the dipstick, hard to read but it should be between the hot markings on the dipstick.

Rear of the engine on the drivers side, usually has a yellow top and looks similar to the engine dipstick.

ok thankyou, ill check 2mrw- hopefully its not in a random place like my washer bottle..which i still havent discovered yet..lol

yeah i seen where its supposed to be on another thread , however , the guy that had the car before me has done all kinds of crazy things to this car, some of which are somewhat questionable.

I was wondering if because it was a jap import it might be somewhere else, or the fact its had an HKS intercooler put in and the aircon removed that it might have been relocated- i cannot see anywhere ??

I have seen one with the battery relocated to the boot and the washer bottle where the battery should be and the SWB has them in the boot so maybe try there.

ok thankyou again, ill check all this out 2mrw- ill stop rambling on at you now, you must feel like my personal advisor at the moment- and i dont want an invoice through my post monday :)

hi mr sufc. ( does that stand for southend united footy club) , anyway , i have exactly the same problem with mine. when its cold its fine but sometimes plays up when hot. the worst is when i go from drive to reverse. some guys have come up with answers on this thread that i will get checked out on my z. also, that jap specialist you used, is it REDLINES because thats who i will be useing.

hi, yes it does stand for that, lol. The company is in rawreth round the back of Makros- i believe its called Westfield motors. Alot of my mates with evos and imprezas use them hence why i thought would be safe bet- im not taking anything away from them as they are a friendly and helpful company, and when they took my car back in and changed some O rings they did not charge me and gave me a free courtesy car :)

Anyway, ive found the washer bottle at last, it was sat inside a rubber mount that your boot sits on above passenger rear light- i only managed to spot it cos there was a slight gap in interior trim inside boot that i noticied a white bottle inside, looked up and there it was, lol, who'd of thought!

As for the gearbox oil- i checked the dipstick when engine was cold, and it showed full, i then run the engine for 2 mins in neutral and checked whilst engine running and it showed it at the bottom of hot (just up from bottom of dipstick).

So im guessing it might need slightly topping up - where do i fill it up from? :)

And ill clean the temp sender terminals- but where do i find those please?

I know nothing about underbonnets nor do i pretend to, and i appreciate all your help :)

Me again, just want to earn another £50 consultancy fee ....

You fill up from the dipstick hole, pretty fiddly to do. If that doesnt fix it another possible cause is the PCV valves, so you can add that to your list of possiblities.

Get the car on a consult. Check the timing (timing mark should show what the consult says), check the TPS setting and also check the base idle. Someone with a consult in your area will know exactly how to do this (hopefully) :)
