OK so i've put in Redline MT90 (about x3 litres) and also some Molyslip.

Driven about 300 miles to Cornwall and still the gears whine in 1-3.

Soon as i dip the clutch when idling the noise dissapears completely or if i'm in 4th or 5th again no noise whatsoever! :headvswal

Does this mean i need to pull the gearbox apart and fix it or can i just run it with the noise until it goes bang!!!!!!

Any ideas as i can really afford a new gearbox just yet!

Cheers

Alex

Have you checked that the Rubber gaitors beneath the Gearstick gaitors are not torn ? Its quite suprising the noise difference between a torn gaitor and a good one, its not abnormal for gearboxes to whine, but just usually can't hear it.

Input shaft bearing bud unfortunatly

Noise will occur with clutch pedal up if its an iput

If noise appears with pedal down its just the clutch release bearing

Either put up with the noise, which to be fair wont harm the gearbox and should last for many miles without issues, or rebuild /replacment gearbox.

as david said check the gators under the console are not split/loose and replace if so as it can cause a similar noise as air rushes up between the transmission tunnel

to answer your question you can drive the car with a worn input bearing as you have replaced the oil it should last for thousands of miles, turn the stereo up for now.

HTH greg

I had this with my avensis......dip the cluch and ta da no noise, take foot off the clutch and the noise magically re-appeared.

Turned out to be something like the secondary thrust bearing? I don't know its what some mechanicy type bloke told me. The middle bit that pops out the big end of the gearbox..........the noise got worse over the next 20,000 miles......but still didn't break down. Just gradually turned from a whine to a rattle

I enventually treated it to another gearbox from a local scrap yard!

Input shaft bearing it is then!

Anyone have any exploaded views of the gearbox?

Would like to see where the Input Shaft Bearing is????

Cheers

Alex

If it was the input shaft bearing then it would do it in all gears. Check the gaitor, thats my bet :)

Might be layshaft bearings. I had to do this on mine. Exactly the same symptoms as yours, and a pig of a job to get the box apart fully ;)

As greg said, it WILL last for ages like that, so just turn the stereo up or knock some holes in your exhaust baffles   :wack:

Might be worth having a look at getting a new one through Nissan. As silly as it may sound, if you get a 96onward TT GB, they are much better built with stronger bearings and better syncros. I think they retail for around £1,000

Gearbox reconditioning will cost £600 - £700 at least and as far as I know, there are some parts you can't get.

Not a bad price for a brand new gearbox............then there's the fitting!!!!!!!

I've changed a gearbox and overdrive on my old Triumph Spitfire in a few hours but not sure if i should attempt one on the 300..........then again how hard could it be???

Is that brand new as in a post 96 TT box with stronger bearings better syncro......?

Also how long would fitting take?

Nissan OEM 300ZX 98+ Spec Transmission Twin Turbo

States it as being the 96onwards on Z1....with the same script...

96+spec TT 5speed Transmission

This is the newest and latest release of the 300ZX Tranny. The earlier version of the 300ZX Transmissions have soft synco rings, and cause grinding in gears. With the latest release from the later model Z32 from Japan, the syncro rings, along with a few new designed gears, this transmission is designed to last.

Don't think Nissan left it till the last production year to release a new GB...maybe they did. Something's wrong somewhere. lol

to answer the question it is 96 onwards

It will cost over £1000 to have new syncros fitted! I know from experience :) Nissan will now only supply the uprated parts and you need to buy a full kit totalling ~£850 plus vat, as the new syncros are much bigger. Add to this the labour costs and you're well over £1k...

How much did it cost in the end Dunk????

Going from memory (been a couple of years now...) I got 3 or 4 bearings from Nissan and the total was around £100

HTH

Rob
