I'm not really up on cameras, ive got a kodak easy share 7.1mp cameral at the moment which is ok but its just not great but i have not a clue what to buy??

Ive bought a few mags and been on a few websites but they all seem to be completly different, i presume like alot of the home cinema mags that there biased towards certain makes.

Anyway not after one of them big bulky ones, needs to be pretty small but want a good quality one :)

Not really got a budget but obviously nothing silly money LOL

Any ideas welcome :p

I like the Panasonic Lumix

The wife has a 4 meg one that is fantastic

The father in law has a 6 meg one and he can use it

I don't know if they go higher but they will beat the Kodak hands down on everthing, very good lense and very easy to use.

consider the Canon Ixus 75 - what I just got

read up loads on it first.

best camera Ive ever had - quality is superb - look in the pics section for some pics I just done.

if you want a few at full res I can email you them.

Video quality is fantastic too (so much Im gonna sell my camcorder) :)

I've got the Canon but I'd buy the Panny if I was buying now. Leica lense with 10x optical zoom! My dads got the 6mp and the zoom is amazing.

Mike, based on what I sell I would choose anything in the Sony Cybershot range anyday... I get to play with all the latest models on a day to day basis and find the Sony's first of all the most user friendly as are The Panasonic Lumix range and also the Sony's have got a really fast processor so when your taking those fast moving objects like Z'eds passing by for example, from the time when you press the shoot button down it near Instantaneously takes the photo, ie bugger all shutter lag!! It is milliseconds literally! Another good reason is the Carl Zeiss hand polished lenses so colour come out accurate and detail is supurb...

It's not all about Mega Pixels with digital camera's, the Lens is the most important factor and this is why you see some cheap cameras under £100 boasting 8 Mega pixels... Crap lenses on them though and lots of shutter lag and not very user friendly!!!

The last thing to considder is battery life... Choose one with a lithium ion battery as these will last a hell of a lot longer than AA's... People argue with me that ifd your on holiday and your batt runs out what do you do, with AA you just go to a shop!! Well a Lithium Ion is good enough for a days shooting and you can charge it up in your hotel room or find a PC with a USB port and charge it from that! :D Hope this helps!!

Compact or SLR?

I bought a Cannon IXUS850IS recently.

It's small, easy to use - and the pics are great - good enough for a single picture to fill a double page spread in a top magazine.

I went for it as it has a wide angle lense (28mm). I hear the just released Lumix has a very long telephoto lense (X10) which is good.

iv got an Olympus 4.0mp camera which i bought a few years back with a fantastic 10x optical zoom lens, picture quality is superb.

whatever you choose dont get drawn into a high pixel count camera which compromises on lens quality! :)

i'm trying to get a really good all rounder which looks nice and but is also compact etc

so far after reading mags, websites etc etc etc i have come up with a short list.

Fuji FinePix F31fd £120

Nikon Coolpix P5000 £199

Panasonic DMC FX50 £169

Sony DSC-N2 £199

Canon IXUS 75 £163

the short list if made up of just a combination of good quality and good all rounders, i was suprised that a cheaper camera made it in there as its a little basic and ugly but it does what it says on the tin type camera LOL

If anyone has any experience of these cameras please let me know :)

Mike

I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-N1.

8.1 Megapixels and a 3" touch screen at the rear, photo quality is excellent and the battery life is really good too.

The only downside is although the MP4 video (or whichever format its in) is really good quality but it does take up a high amount of storage space when filming.

I paid over £300 for it but that was 18months ago.

I've had 3 over the past 2 years.

Pentax Optio S6, Richo R5 and Canon Ixus 75.

PM Me your email addy and I can send you some sample pics form the canon if you like

I cant rate it enough - shame there no remote shutter function tho - just set it to delay for x seconds.

As I have said, the Lumix is a fantastic camera with an anti shake facility.

If you go away from digital and look at high end pro cameras then Lieca have always been one of if not the best make of cameras, due to the lense they use, couple that with the panasonics ability to reproduce images (thats going from my experience with camcorders) you can't loose.

See if you can try before you buy at a local store and see if the controls suit you.
