Taken my car to the garage this morning to replace the O2 sensors just got a call from them saying it is too low to get on any of their ramps apart from the MOT ramp which is always being used. I said to them that the O2 sensors point up out of the engine bay so would of thought it would be easiest (or maybe even the only) way to get at them would be from above rather than underneath. They said they need to get at them from underneath and they cant help me.

Is this correct or are they flobbing me off??? I am guessing they tried to put it onto the ramp to try and see them in the exhaust and couldnt get it on the ramp and just gave up without looking from above.

cant see why they can't get it on any of there other ramps. I put mine on a two poster. just jack up the car a little and put the lifter under one side then do the same the other. If they cant even work out how to get your car onto a ramp or lift you sure you want them to do the work on it anyway???

The O2 sensors are removed from the top, unless you have the gearbox out I would have thought.

Must be pretty hard to do from the top? no space and all that. Its hard enough getting to the pcv valves on the side. What does the manual say for them? I don't think they are fobbing you off mate, if you can do them from the top they probably don't think its worth there while. Lots of places are like that once they see the engine bay of a Zed.

I always did them from the top, unless they were welded in, and my arms are not exactly stick like!

I got mine out from the top and in my eyes thats the only way, you need the right o2 wrench, a elbow joint thingy and a extention bar. Make sure they are red hot before starting and they should come out but do remeber they have been in there a very long time. ( and yeah they are talking crap)

couldnt find anything about O2 sensor maintanance in manual.

They look tricky to get out but probably trickier if you were trying to get at them from the bottom.

Been a bit up and down with this garage. They failed me on MOT then were not very easy to deal with while i tried to sort it out. Then when i took it back for the re-test they passed it and adjusted my timing for me and didnt charge (what i asked for initially along with MOT).

dont know of any decent garages in London as most seem like crooks. what is most annoying is that they have wasted a day of trying to get it fixed which i want to do before the rolling road next weekend.

cant really tell them they can be done from the front will just have to pick it up take it to the next place and hope they have a bit more patience!

I HATE NOT HAVING TIME, TOOLS, A GARAGE AND THE MECHANICAL ABILITY TO DO THESE THINGS WITHOUT HAVING TO WASTE MY TIME KEEP GOING TO THESE USELESS MORONS!!

I know how you feel mate. I've had the same problems trying to find people I can trust nearby. I found a guy down the road who was a good bloke and ex F1 so seemed to know his stuff but I got raped for labour hours. I now go all the way to Hastings simply because I've found a good bloke who I trust. He runs a run of the mill MOT garage and isn't a Zed specialist but he knows his stuff and has a lot of experience, plus customer service has been excellent so I'll keep going back.

i have phoned round a few other places close to work so i can get this routine, 1 hour job done without going out of my way too much. but no luck. one place is relocating, one is just a body shop and some polish guys who did some good, honest work on my old prelude arent around anymore (typical if the govt decided to ship off the only useful ones in the area!).

I ended up phoning back the garage it is at now and tell them that the manual says they can only be accessed from the top, take out the battery etc. They said they will have another look and get back to me so fingers crossed.

I have always had trouble finding good garages in London. It is the normal with London that becuase it is so big there is no loyalty and not easy to either build up a good or bad reputation in the area so most places just take the easy route and take the pee!

The place it is at is a classic car specialist but never seen any classics in there. i bet if i turned up in some rotten old spitfire they would be falling over themselves to help me!

On the drivers side you can cut the wires off the sensor and use a deep impact socket with some long extensions and a power bar to crack it loose, the passenger side is more awkward to get to as the aircon pipe going through the firewall is right over the top of the sensor causing an obstruction , we managed with the same socket but would be far easier with a proper O2 crows foot :hyper: . HTH

Hi Mate, used to work for Nissan in the early 90's and all we had were 2 posters and a raised 4 poster that 300's didn't fit on. We used to have a wide 2 poster and someone would lift the arches slightly to get the feet under the sill. Whether you get to them from top or bottom, still a bit odd for a garage to just give up!!??! Not very customer friendly me thinks.

When we used to get Luton topped vans in for work they never fitted in workshop so we did them outside on Jacks, rain or shine! Your garage can't need the business!

last garage mine went to i got 2 of the guys there to gently lift the nose so it cleared the end of their 4 poster ramp... Went on a treat then :D

that you jason? ;)

fairly easy from the top with an O2 sensor crows foot socket & extension. be prepared to replace the boss it screws into (which you can get seperatly no matter what Nissan tell you LOL :D )

Hi Paul,

yeah its me, finally got it going and worked out this site. You still got Zed mate? I don't see it outside anymore or you opening the posts at work?

PS you got an O2 crows foot socket? I've got a dead sensor. Just out of interest would this cause me a hesitation/ lack of power at speed? It won't hard accelerate but will creep up?

yes mate, zeds parked round the back - wont fit between the posts they put up the slip road to stop the pikeys parking caravans up there!!

got an O2 sensor socket too, pick it up anytime mate :)

it can cause hesitation, not normally a dramatic loss of power at full throttle as the ECU will come out of closed loop mode. you can do an O2 test without a Consult on the diagnostic light to see if they are switching

Hi Mate, thanks for that will pop down after the weekend, is it OK to come to work? Don't want to upset your boss!! Have access to Consult anytime so just as easy to run it in there and plug it in. Will change sensor and see how it goes, any other ideas should this fail?

regards
