If the MAF is failing what sort of symptoms does this typically throw up?My car is very lumpy on idle and just touching the accelerator it's all over the place and lumpy in lower revs ..over 3000 rpm it straightens out and seems to be random (better at times than others)Would a failing MAF also affect an o2 reading?

A complete failure of the MAF stops the car going over 2500RPM. I'm not sure what happens on an intermittant one.

As far as I am aware there is no intermediate phase, it either works or its busted, if its busted then like nzniggles says, you wont get it to rev over 2500 rpm. HTH

You can get rough running symptoms if the hot wire has got dirty or is damaged.

It's just the same when you get water in the MAF through a wet filter.

See if you can swap yours with someone local as there's not really any other way of testing it :)

What Chris said, test with some one elses, I did the same to a mates. It's only nose pannel and a jubilee or two. Dead Maf will stop it reving from 2.5, it goes in limp mode and will miss like **** and bog down.

Typically that shit weather guard on the z near the air box collects water and lets it into the intake, foam filters are a ****er for killing maf's cause they just get so damp and wet they destroy the sensor.

Some can intermitently work ok, I've seen ones dry out and work fine, then a day later they put the car into limp mode!

Last i heard they were around 250 from the stealers, 60ish s/h.

What he said........

A while back I had a TT Volvo S80 and the MAF went on it. First signs were it would miss under load and the tick over was rough. after a few days it wouldnt run above about 3000 revs then after a week the fooker wouldnt start when warm. Now I know it was a Volvo and a later car than the 300zx but it was a TT and after I got it fixed it ran like a dream. I got shot just after that anyway because it cost me £450 to get it done at a main dealers. Not had anything like that on the 300 though.
