there's no grinding noises or anything, just refuses to change up from 2'nd. Not a good sign I know. I've done the workshop manual ecu test and all 10 lights flash normal so im thinking it's a mechanical problem. Is there anything else i could check? grasping at straws I know.....

Cheers , i think that's the company i used before. I might ring them anyway and see do they have any end of summer bargains lol

Third and fourth always go on these, isn't it due to a faulty solonoid that selects third and fourth? Think there is two in the box, one does 1st and 2nd other does third and fourth.

Your probably looking at a few hundred for a tranny place to do a quick fix, won't last long tho.

I'd say like most ppl, go for the emanuel conversion much more reliable, still nothing like doing 100 in second on an auto Z tho lol.

Let me know how you get on with A&M

My box went a second time due to him not fitting a new gearbox seal

I lost all tranny oil and destroyed the box

He fixed it a second time under warranty

He then notified me he wouldnt work on the box again as he was giving up on

"old cars" as he was doing too many new mercs which are apparently

terribly unreliable.

Jeff at Zedworld Birmingham did a conversion for me on my other Z in 2003

He did a very good job

When Nissan build these boxes they last, on average say 80k miles? Some lots more.

When some second rate rebuilder gets his hands on one, does a so called rebuild, and it lasts less then 20k mles. Something is wrong.

And I would say the rebuilder either doesnt know his stuff, or he simply repairs the bits he can get away with and charges big bucks for a full rebuild.

A proper rebuild/overhaul should simply be as good as new, or if the guy knows his boxes, better than new. Ie 100k miles and 10+ years..

Funny you should say that, I called them this afternoon and was told the very same thing. Said he only deals with mercs ,volkswagen and Audi now. He did give me the name of someone else in dublin who will want 2k for the job minimum............don't think so

it would take some cash and some work, but could you not find a tt with say blown turbos, tatty bodywork etc with a reasonable gear box, rob its gearbox and then sell the remains as parts. Keep your fine example on the road...

End of the day, your broken box must at least be worth somthing because there will be working parts in there... so to anyone with the skills in repairing it its worth somthing in its self. Let alone everything from the doner Z... :)

mick, i rang a fella i know today 24 years exp ,,conway tranmissions in walkinstown, he now does not do jap cars, he put me on to pat cassidy transmissions who specialises in jap cars (who i also know) pat himself is on hols till tues, his manager said 1,500 to 2,000 to recondition your box or about 600 to fit an auto box that you supply, if thats any help, talk soon trish

Sounds like A&M only replace the bits they can get away with, and dont do proper full rebuilds. Explains why he dosent want to work on old cars as he cant be bottered to do a proper job.

If he does a half arsed job on a newish merc the other parts in the box should still be good which is why he probably dosent get people coming back to him after 10K miles with further problems

Sounds like a sticking valve or solenoid to me. Have you tried a diagnoses test? test

Yep done it,not showing any faults

Thanks trish that's the fella i was onto you about yesterday. I'll give it some thought and do the lotto

With all due respect, as I have said, third gear clutch is a weak point, loosing third is common, you can do all the checks you want but I am pretty confident in the end you will find the clutch has had it.

On a "fast road" modified box, IIRC they modify the third gear clutch piston (as well as the valve body) to make this clutch much stronger.

bad luck Chewie :( exactly the same happened to me. i decided to go for manual conversion and never looked back. (i had to drive 100 mile round trip to collect the parts for conversion, with only 1st and 2nd gear!!! i think i probably wiped out half the rainforest doing that!)

Surely there must be pressure checks that can be done, anyone got any info on this as it seems a lot of work and expense to go through if its maybee a solenoid at fault. Maybee a solenoid is ok electrically but mechanically its fooked so it wouldnt show up with a diagnostic check.

Cheers John

I would have to agree with this too......

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I agree 100% Mark but its down to profit so thats why they rebuilt it to cost rather than a full overhaul with a years warranty, lets face it some cars hardly do any mileage from year to year so they aint gonna fail within a short time (or hopefully shouldnt), some people use their cars every day and more than likely will fail.

As I mentioned before I work on the buses and had a year with a ZF Franchised dealer where the boxes were overhauled then testrigged to check the clutches etc and they were given a 3 year warranty at the end of it, so it costs the franchise to repair anything so thats why they were properly done. My manager started to get grief because the mark up was tight in some cases when a box needed a lot to repair it to service exchange spec.

Other companies who overhauled them to a cost would only offer 1 year and some of the boxes were in and out like a yoyo getting fault after fault repaired and more than likely would be completely fooked after like 18 months but were slightly cheaper than ours..

The old story is people out trying to make a quick buck from other people with shoddy repairs.

My 2p's worth.

cheers John

I bought my 200 witch had its auto box rebuilt for just under £1300 this was rebuilt 3 months before I bought the car it lasted me 4 months and was completely shot, converted it to manual.

Its a tough choice to make but I think I would go for the manual conversion over a rebuild

My point being, IF you spend money, however much, for a rebuild, then thats what you should get. Many people on here have rebuilds (read repairs?), just for the box to go wrong again soon afterwards (relatively).

If you "buy" a repair, fair enough, but a rebuild is just what it says on the tin. Or should be.

And lets face it, these boxes are not that clever. They are old tech now. Anyone worth his claim of being an automatic gearbox specialist can rebuild these in his sleep.

The few on here that have had proper, and often fast road, rebuilds dont seem to suffer problems afterwards.

Just like to thank everyone's input on this thread. It has been very helpful and informative and changed my mind on selling. It just reminds me what a great bunch of people are on here to educate dunces like me on the workings of the motorcar.. I've taken a lot on board and I will go for a transplant soon when finances allow (story of my life). I'm in great form now :nana2:

I've seen known of four autoboxes on close friends go, and then have all been the soloinoid, which in turn kills your laccy bands lol.

Most ppl who do recons, fudge the part, cheap fix, good profit, hence 99% of the time it is a shit job and will die within another 6k
