is there any way to do an onboard ECU diagnostic on a 2001 SLK 230 kompressor as we do on the zed? the one i'm using has the check engine light on but I was told it was a coilpack on cylinder 3 that was at fault, but was replaced a few months ago and the light is back... can anyone help?

sometimes i go down surrey or se london, guess i could take a trip to kent at some point... is there a manual way to reset the check engine light, and see if it reappears?

also paul, what are slk32 AMGs like? are they reliable? and do they still have the handling dynamics of the lesser SLKs?

they are a much better car, suspension feels a little tighter than the 230K's.

however a new shape 350 is even better! (or better still a new 55AMG :hyper: )

let me know if you are around the canterbury area, will always plug it in for a diagnostic for you mate :)

thanks paul! i might have to take you up on that diagnostic offer!!

i am thinking of an SLK32 AMG POSSIbLy, not enough money for a 350 or 55AMG! in the trade *sometimes* the 32AMG goes for a resonable price. otherwise i might call upon my dads old contacts to see if theres one in singapore for sale that i can get a COC for.. but its pretty unlikely.

one more thing, how are the old CLK 55AMGs? are they reliable, built well? they are lookin pretty reasonable pricewise these days

yea! been looking at them myself!! :D

pretty good cars all in all! only prob is the same as the SLK's, they have the same steering box & front upper & lower wishbone suspension that never feels quite as positive as later mercs that use racks & mcpherson struts :)

good well built cars tho, better build quality than the early new shape ones!

Looking at my SLK230, there are only 2 coil packs - it appears to have the "wasted spark" system IE 1 coil pack firing 2 cylinders.

Mine is a 1999/2000 model; when I suffered a break down recently, the RAC patrol man said that for that particular year only a MB dealer would have the necessary equipment to accurately diagnose the fault. The later ones were more accessible.

Don't know if he was talking shite though, but Paul C would know ;)

I do like the SLK 32 AMG as well, but I would prefer the new shape 350. My next car, methinks.......

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

well if the garage has access to a scope with the right pickup then anyone could diagnose it! merc diagnostic does make it easier as it may have fault codes listed & also has a smooth running fault counter to detect misfires! ;)

RAC chappie's diagnostic gubbins would not do mine

He thought the reason for the bad misfire over 2.5k RPM was down to a coil pack. Wrong! Turned out that the breather valves had become blocked (Hughes MB say quite common on 230K?), causing oil to contaminate the AFM.

Result, a new AFM, new breather valve and the mechanic having to remove the inlet manifold and intercooler to clean out the mess from the spewed oil........Cost me £900 :mac1:

That said, the car runs better than ever now :D

Hi Paul! Not sure if you're still active here and sorry about resurrecting an old post! my PM privileges have run out.

I have an s320CDI 2002 LWB.

1. The airmatic suspension appears to have collapsed at the front! the front is low, no longer raises and I get warnings on the dashboard. Any idea on what I should look out for and advice on how I can diagnose the problem?

2. I now get an EPC warning upon kickdown, and the revs do not rise when I see the warning. Any ideas what this could be? MB Collindale replaced an injector recently and since then this has happened intermittently. MB Collindale for whatever reason cannot solve the problem and insist that it isnt due to them changing the injector... hmmm

3. Central locking pneumatic pump failure!!?!? Central locking no longer operates, any tips on how to fix this pump or is it a replace job?

4. Merc Anti corrosion warranty, any idea on how long this lasts and is it dependant on FMBSH? A merc of this vintage obviously has the dreaded corrosion! The car does have FMBSH but recently lost the service book - any idea of how I can get a reprint? my local MB Collindale cannot help (was not originally supplied by them, nor was it serviced by them other than the very last service). Original supplier is Rycroft MB and they did the original servicing but they cannot help me for some reason!

your advice (or anyone elses for that matter) would be greatly appreciated.

best,

darren
