question for you peeps

im trying to source a drain in the car, and believe the fault may lie with the interior bulb light. it was removed when i bought it, put the bulb in, and bulb is always on.

At night the door open light on the dash glows too -

Question Time (numbered in importance ;))

1.) Does the zx have a timer relay for the lights (ie close the doors lights on for 10secs) like many new cars?

2.) if 1=yes, where is the relay located

3.) if not - is it likely to be bad earth/sensor on one of the doors

Mine dosen't have a timer on the lights. On or off. That dosen't mean that a later model dosen't have this feature. You should post up the spec of your car year etc so people can perhaps say about it.

It does sound like you have a short in the system somewhere however.

Heres a scan of the wiring diagrame.

Sorry - good point! its a TT Auto Import on a 90 plate - mk1 stylie :)

im flumoxed now - the fault may be with the central locking relay - so i removed the fuse for the 'room lamp' and autolock - lets see what happens in the morning (yn)

however - upon doing that my stereo no-longer works - im not stupid right? thats on another circuit!?

instead of waiting to see if the battery dies, get hold of an ammeter and full fuses one by one to isolate which circuit the drain is in...

Not aware of any series car having a timer relay.

You sure it's not just the door switch that's gone? Would explain the interior light staying on & the door open light - you probably just can't see it in the day!

Mine is a straight on or off........at the begining mine wasnt playing ball either....messed about with the switch at the light itself and it was cured.....

door open - lights on

door closed - lights off (no delays - just *bang* the door is shut and the light is gone)

Sounds like either the switch, the sensor the the doors/boot is shut or a short.

mine has a timed light but comes with my alarm system are you sure you havent got a badly installed alarm whiuch is causing a drain!

I had a drain on my battery and I never found what caused it and if I left it for several days the battery died however I now have a solar panel trickle charger for £9.99 from Maplin and the battery now has sufficient charge and has started every time I wanted it to!

Check your door switches for them earthing out or your interior switch for loose wires... My boot light comes on with my interior light so it might be worth looking at this too

At night the door open light on the dash glows too -

This one sounds more like the door sensors.....check the boot too

I really am thinking that someone may have tampered with my wiring... i remove the fuse at the bottom left of this Diag 300zxfuselayout.gif

an now my stereo ceases to function!!! put it in again, works fine - can someone else try this on a 90ish import. is this normal, or has my wiring been tampered with.

The switches appear to be fine - so thinking the glow on the door could be due to too much resistance down that cable. just a thought

my thoughts were the door senors too - where are the earths go for these?

Normally the switch is earthed thru the screw into the body of the car, hence you should only have one wire to the back of the switch
