Hello,

Just got my lovely Z, spent lots of time/money tidying it up a bit, and then this...

Couple days ago in the sodding rain it wasn't firing on all cylinders but then sorted itself. CAT overheat light came on briefly. Then yesterday going up hill it wouldn't rev cleanly. Didn't sound particularly bad but might have only been dropping one cylinder. So I thought (seeing as it's reading 1/4 tank) dodgy fuel. This morning on the way to work, similar not revving happily. On way home from work it died. Towed home :(

Now it'll turn over fine, just won't start. It nearly does (on about 2 cylinders) but second you start turning it over nothing. ECU diagnostic gives me a 55 so seems ok?

Anyway I have had the PTU off, the bottom connector was a bit green so cleaned it all up. Refitted, still the same. I'm going to try and find the spark plugs and see if I get a spark to each one now, but I have no manual and the engine is a mess, where is everything? :D

Does anyone have a working PTU I can try please? I live in midst Somerset (Taunton/Bridgwater). Wonder if Southwest Z sell them??

I have a hill climb school to take the Z in next Tuesday, I'd really REALLY like

to attend this so if we can fix it before then brilliant :D

:( Nevermind, at least it broke down before Billing/Hill climb so I've time to fix it, not on the way or halfway up the hill :)

LOL the plugs are under the individual coils between the "fingers" of the metal plenum on top of the engine.

Just unscrew them and pull them out.

It's worth cleaning their connectors too.

Could well be your PTU so I'm sure someone can help put with one :)

What a mission it is to change the plugs! This engine is fine only when you're sat in the car driving it, any other occassion it's rubbish :D

All plugs give me a spark if I turn it over (very briefly) and are the correct colour.

I see there is a sight glass just beside the battery, what is this for? I'm peering into it and it looks very empty. Is this fuel and have I just ran out of fuel?? My stupid gauge is reading 1/4 full and when I bought the car it was right on the E...

Ahh I had also guessed that :)

Why does everything I touch under the bonnet that's plastic crumble instantly :( heh.

The grey/greeny connectors that plug onto the coils that are part of the wiring loom, can you buy those? I have six coil packs which are connected mainly by gravity now :(

Ok I've called it a night now, gonna stick a jerry can of fuel in it tomorrow and cross my fingers. I've now got 4 alloys to strip with nitromors then blast ready to take them to the powder coaters for 8am tomorrow lol, why does everything happen at once?? :)

Oh any ideas on what's wrong much appreciated. Is the fuel pump somewhere I can find and listen to check it's working or any way I can check the pressure? I have spark, presumably I have air, I can only missing fuel?

ECU still reads 55 though :-/

Cheers

Hi,

Have you got an aftermarket cone type air filter fitted?...As some of them don't have any protection from the rain and you can get the airflow meter wet in those conditions?

Cheerz,

Jez.

Hi,

Had thought of this, but apparently it'll still run and rev to just past 2k with a dodgy AFM?

I have a HKS single mushroom type so I think it's fine. And it was dry yest/today when it died :( Also isn't the AFM on the ECU diagnostics? Hmm

Hi,

The HKS filter is of a sponge mushroom type and so once wet, may take a while to dry out?...Worth checking anyway.

Cheerz,

Jez

Hey,

Yeah... shame upon shame I had no petrol. The gauge (which was working FINE all last week) displays 1/4 of a tank at all times. I'm amazed how many miles I did between the first splutter the other day and fully running out! Can't believe I minced about checking for a good spark on all the cylinders when I just had to put bloody petrol in it! SHAME

Anyway thanks for coming round Greg, much appreciated! Thanks for giving everything a once over as well as pointing out a few things. Top bloke. Oh and we'll have to postpone the beers I owe you till another event now Billing is off.

Anyway gonna change the fuel filter tomorrow (hope SWZ have one). Should I be getting any injector cleaner or anything else? It seems to run ok, but it's done 60k now and who knows what crap made it's way past the filter.

Anyone else had a dodgy fuel gauge before?

no probs bud, your driving

looking at how dirty the fuel is matey. I would change the fuel filter once you have ran a few tanks through, then change filter/some injector cleaner wouldnt hurt, then add some shells finest, then hopefully you should be fine there.
