Had some Master come round earlier and I've decided to take up Karate!

Go Kan Ryu - or GKR, is a style of Karate mixing features of Shotokan and Goju Ryu together into one style. The name roughly translates to "The Hard and Complete System of the Way of the Empty Hand".

So excited but scared at the same time...... anyone do any martial arts on here?

eeerrrrr theres no way a chick can spread her legs in a non sexual way :x:

lol

s-tune you get taught that if they are right in your face you either but them then move back into position or spit in their face and while their wiping there face which is a reflex then blah blah blah you get the gist. All about distance, I you know you are going to have trouble you always stay just out of there arms reach. That way they can never hit you.

only time i saw any of the family in a fight was one new year in staffordshire, some local nob was trying to crack onto my wife, but i ignored it as she can deal with it herself. well her brother was quite drunk so me and him went outside so he could get some fresh air, then one of nob mates came outside and saiid " my mates chatting you misses up, you should go and sort im out", so i said "why, she can do it by herself" to which he got humpty and said we all thought we were so ard. we told him to go back inside but then he decided to say to my bother in law "ohh you think you ard i can take you" so he stood back and every time this guy came charging at him he gave one kick and the guy went flying. the guy after 4 kicks then stood 300yrds away and just mouthed, so we just laughed. ohh i forgot my BIL gave 3 warnings before he gave the forst kick (apperently you have to as a black belt) long story i know.

I do GKR too. In fact, I'm an instructor in the Crawley region.

I'm sure you'll have a great time - it's a friendly family-oriented club. It's also non-contact (although my ribs may disagree after senior training tonight), so Hayley should be fine. :D

Haven't done anything for about 3 years, Vale Tudo was the last thing I did. Its a mixed martial art crossing Jiu Jitsu and Roman Greco wrestling, pretty brutial but it works.

I'm a bit older now :( so could do without the injurys so am thinking about good ol' boxing training to get my fitness back up. Good luck with it all though, you'll be fine ;)

yep i've recently taken up karate again after a break of 10 years, i study shotokan and Kyusho Jitsu - from what ive seen there seems to be a big trend towards learning bunkai ( application technique ) and trying to revert karate back towards the okinawa form of fighting. compared to the karate of 10 years ago its much more interesting because it introduces joint locks and throws.

Regards,

alex

Paul C has got to be a 3rd / 4th dan by now. Not sure if the recent love in his life has had an impact on his training though :).

Done a few martial arts myself. Was training from the age of 4 constistantly up to 10 years ago when I was tempoary paralised. Always prefered full contact rather than the points system. Never really got back into the swing of it after that. Don't mean to be modestly but I was pretty shit hot. These days I couldn't punch my way out of a wet paper bag :nelson:.

I studied under Mr Miyagi. I can't fight for shit but his car is well shiney....don't even talk to me about his fence.

G G G G G-UNIT! :D

Im a black sash in southern praying mantis done it for 9years very hard training but makes you super fit and very strong, also makes you a better person only had one confrontation and that was 3 weeks ago.

I'm surprised there's so many on here that do/have done martial arts, and to be honest a refreshing change.

It seems that it was very big in the early nineties, thanks to the revival of martial art films (Van Damme etc) but seems to have gone a bit quiet now.

I was heavily involved with the scene for over 25 years, winning the Welsh, British and European titles in various styles, the main one being Kickboxing. I should never have given it up, but I found it hampered me at work quite a bit. I'm a copper and found it difficult not to effect an arrest without doing it my way, instead of the way the home office wants!! And the fact that my supervisors weren't too happy with me turning up for work with bruised knuckles and facial cuts all of the time didn't help :D

I strongly advise anyone these days to take it up as it is a fantastic way of controlling your aggression, and a way of relieving stress.

Good on you and I hope you enjoy it :duffer:

 wow good on you winning all those titles!

kickboxing and capoeira (Brazillian dance martial art) to me are the best out there!

Van damn when he kicks that palm tree in Kickboxer

im a second dan in origami and a master of the scottish martial art " FOOKYOO " which is mostly headbutting and swearing :headvswal

3 martial arts i would advise if you are serious

Jeet Kune Do.....after years of traditional martial arts the scientific aproach and logical system really made sense filling in the gaps which were apparent in traditional styles.

kali....if you are intrested in weapons this is the one for you, more than just show techniques

Silat.....If you can find people to teach you this then only do it if you are totally serious about martial arts, one of the most lethal arts out there.

another one to think about is gracie jujitsu , one of the finest ground fighting styles around.

by weapons i take it you mean swords and nunchaku thingy's

Always wanted to lean how to use them nunchaku things properly..... fooking awesome seeing someone use them....

Yes I tried looking in to Silat, but as you've stated, there doesn't appear to be many tutors out there-yet! I know there's no one locally that has even heard of it, let alone teach it. Do you know of any clubs?

I knew I shouldn't have started to read this thread! I really have the urge to get back into it all again.
