was poking about under my zed at the weekend and i noticed one of the ball and ring joints of my rose jointed front suspension has been pushed out (ie the ball and the ring are not connected). It is the horizontal bar on the drivers side.

I had a little accident in my car a few months ago were i slapped the wheels against a kerb after going into a spin! I guess it could have been this force that caused the suspension bar to do this.

Since the accident the very inside of the 2 front tyres have worn quite badly could this be linked to the joint being pushed out. I got the tracking done after the rear suspension that was most badly damaged in the accident was fixed.

I guess as it took alot of force to push the suspension apart it will take alot of force to push it back together to how can i do this.

I know i havent been very clear and i will try and get some pictures tomorrow to better explain this.

what part of the suspension are you actually talking about???? you talking about rose jointed tension rods??? or something else.

Sounds like rose jointed tension rods to me - there's no other rose joints on the front end.

One of these?

Not sure that will be repairable, you might have to buy a new one or a set.

Smithy sells them so he might be worth a call.

I wouldn't drive it until you get that fixed as it will be putting a lot of strain on the suspension and I would think it could be quite dangerous.

yes that the one. Just read my message back again and realised i have probably made no sense. The main points are;

* The rose joint on the drivers side tension rod has become detached. I understand this as the black thing coming away from the the chrome bow-tie shaped piece with the ball in the middle.

* I think this might of happened during an accident where the wheels had a lateral impact against a kerb. The passenger rear bore the brunt of this shock and has since had the bent suspension parts replaced.

* The very inside of both front tyres has worn very badly (rest of the tyre fine) and i am wondering where this is linked?

* how can i reatach the rose joint on the tension rod if i dont have sophisticated presses etc.

Thanks

Clive. if they have popped out their fitting mate, get new ones. Once tehy pop they wont stop. The betal will become burred and they will come out with every knock, and you dont want you suspention disconecting mate, it aint good.

It might cause tyre wear on one side due to the toe in being out but not on both I wouldn't have thought.

That's more likely to be due to bigger wheels/tyres, lowered suspension or camber being out of alignement.

The tension rod takes all the strain when braking and cornering so without it your suspension could collapse.

Here is a picture i just took of it. you cant see it well but it is unseated.

Can I buy a single rod or do they come in pairs? I dont know the make but they look slightly different to the ones ChrisC posted with a green hexgaonal shaped shaft.

Once i get it is it easy to remove the old one and fit the new one myself? does it need any adjustment to be the right length or is it ready set up?

I've seen those green ones before a long time ago but I'm not sure on the brand.

I don't think anyone sells single ones so you'll have to get a pair.

Smithy is about the cheapest and always gives good service:

I just got a set of those myself and they are superb quality.

You might get something a fraction cheaper off eBay but I wouldn't trust them as they're a fairly critical suspension part really.

They are dead easy to fit but you will need to get the wheel alignment done after as you don't really have anything to measure it against with the old one being broken.

You could adjust it to roughly the right length but you might end up with more tyre wear and expense in future.
