my cousin has a bmw 325, which he took into a garage to get the tappets set (just a bit of maintenence, were noisey) anyway the guy that done it over tightened it and when my cousin opened his car up a bit it snapped, so he took it back and they put new tappets in and did alll the new belts and cam belts and so on

two days ago (atfer a week of driving fine) it just died on him (apperently sounded like a bag of hammers) and wouldnt start, so he took it back again and the guy reckons it has dropped a valve  , but apperently it had nothing to do with them, the guy reckons he can turn the engine by hand about 90% of the way round so thinks its just one valve fooked, but he aint prepared to do the job, so my cousin offered to pay half and now the guy wants fook all to do with him (fobbing him off with all kinds of excuses)

is it coincidence or is it something the garage could have done, they have a good reputation, but didnt help my cousin lol

any advice on what it could be or what he can do next

thanks

Allan

e30s are prone with head related problems, iv had 2 e30s, always had to ajust valve clearances, although saying that both had 120k + miles on and still drove great, if however the valves clearances were set to tight, which is idiotic to do, as you should check with a feeler gauge before and after you tighten/ajust!

if the tolerances were to tight its possible to put to much energy through the valve and in turn cause damage, its also possible its been timed up wrong in which case tight valves clearances and timing out can cause engine problems

IMO i would take it further if thats the case

take it to somone who is willing to check the valve clearances and timing, then go from there

it may feel quicker if either

a) the clearances were that bad originally, then all of a sudden engine was more efficiant due to timing

b) timing was slightly advanced ie.. as paul says which with a slightly advanced timing may well feel quicker.
