I'm collecting a motorbike on my flatbed trailer this week (A Triumph Sprint 955cc).

 

Just wondering what the best way to strap it to the trailer. Is it OK to lie the bike down flat on its side, only I think it will be very tricky keeping it upright ?? Will oil come out if its lying down ? Will it do any harm lying down ?. Any help appreciated

I wouldn't put it on it's side. It may damage the panels / bars / indicators.

 

I think the battery's a sealed one but oil and coolant might dribble out. If the battery's not sealed then acid would leak too.

 

It's easy enough to strap them down with the bike upright - one ratchet strap each side going to something solid plus one mor round the front wheel.

Rachet straps either side of the bike, pulling against each other, and kept upright.

I'm picking a new bike up for my lad tonight actually, but in a van.. Same principle applies though.

Basically strap it down 'till you think it's safe, then strap it some more :D

The MV F4 has to be the best looking bike ever.

 

I move a lot of bikes around for work. IMHO a small number of well used straps is better than loads of them.

 

There's a chance they'll rub the bike or the ratchets will bounce and scratch something or the pressure will bust a plastic lug or something.

Make sure you strap the wheels so they can't move side to side. Wrap the strap round a spoke and ratchet it down. I just bolted two 3x4 bits of wood down to create a chanel for the bike wheels to sit in and then straped the bars, frame and everything else i could strap down

I bought it as salvage, from a breaker. Upon collecting it the tyres were absolutely brand new. Still had the pimples all over them. My guess is he had them fitted and just blasted it without scrubbing them in :( the mould release agent is very slippy.

 

Anyway, the L/H faring, clip on clutch lever exhaust etc etc were damaged, but managed to get ALL parts from ebay.

 

Here is a few pics of it 99% finished, need to fit the (already painted) mirrors and polish out the scratches on the lower faring.
