I'm pretty sure you can report it to eBay as a dispute and it goes to mediation if he doesn't agree to amend his feedback.

The mediation will clearly go in your favour based on the facts.

I did this with someone who messed me about then left negative feedback and won the dispute.

Worth a try I agree, but it didn't work for me. I only have 1 neg, and that was for an item I paid for immediately via paypal and after 3 months it still hadn't arrived, emailed him every week and eventually gave up and left him a neg. Then he gave me a tit for tat neg, I lost my money and the item, ebay didn't want to know. The system falls down in that respect, if you give a genuine neg you'll get an unfair one back from a rogue. People with 1000's of deals and still on 100% must be very passive and avoid confrontation even if they've be wrong done.

Im not trying to defend the guy, but what should you expect for a 1K zed?

I know what you're saying, however believe it or not UK consumer law offers you some protection if you buy a car with undisclosed faults, including repair or a refund for the vehicle (the rules are slightly different for private versus trade sale, and you obviously get more protection with a trade sale). So if the guy says the car's running fine then it should be, doesn't matter whether you pay £1 or £10k.
