"is there such a thing as a pod with no cruise control buttons???"

89-91 (something like that ) models have the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel hence there are then no buttons for cruise control on the pods :)

You can remove the cruise control ecu from footwell, and the gubbins from engine bay. Swap Pods over, change steering wheel.

All years (98-2000) that had cruise control had the button on the pod, and either controls on the steering wheel or on a stalk(93 onwards).

Models without cruise control had no button on the pod.

You could try looking on here.

In this pic where No.24 is, remove this and the solenoid thing next to it and Hicas is gone. All your left with is the buttons on the sterring wheel and the small ECU module, which can stay where it is.

tHATS all i removed around a year ago and it tidies things up nicely ;)
