300zx vs M5

Hello boys and girls.

A friend of mine called down to me last night to show me his 00 BMW M5 that he just bought this week, lovely car with double glazed windows, t.v and all the trimmings.

Handles absolutely fantastically for such a big car, and has the sort of throttle response that I can only dream of having with the 300.

He called over late and at 3 this morning we decided to take the two cars for a race.

We pulled onto the motorway near me which was absolutely car-less, and he took the outside lane with me in the Z on the inside.

We were at 60mph, and agreed that we would go on 3 beeps of the horn.

I had the Z (which is running nothing but an S.E chip and 14psi on auto turbos with a manual box) in third gear with the boost guage just below 0 psi and I waited for the signal.

On 3 I floored it. The M5 and the Z stayed side by side up to 80, at which point the 300 edged slowly ahead and by 110 I was about 3 car lengths in front.

Into 4th and the 300 stopped pulling on the M5, but the M5 wasn't making any ground on me either.

The 300 stayed 3 car lengths ahead of the BM right up to an indicated 160mph when the M5s limiter kicked in.

We both slowed back down to 60, and did it all over again on the way back with the exact same result.

My friend (who I would consider to be an excellent driver) was a little dissapointed to say the least!

Had a similar thing with a new BMW540 but I wiped that thing in to submission.

At 40 I was 5 car lengths behind it. At 90 I was even with it. At 130 I was GONE!!!

I do like BMs though!

has anyone raced a 330csi,my mate has a brand new one but i havnt raced him yet?

ive drove his and its fast but not sure if it would keep up with my zed?

Thas a hell of a result, well done.

Jaylox M5 way faster than 330ci.

Is this the new m5 sorry as i have now gone blank as to when they came out?

There is about a 150bhp difference between a 540 and a M5, not to mention the suspension setup etc.

I think the M5 is about the same weight as a Zed, just that you can get 2 adults, 3 kids and a selection of shopping in one, perhaps not it the Zed.

330's aren't up to much either, about 200bhp I think.

Oh and me too, I like BMW's smile.gif just not mine. frown.gif

330i's are 231bhp..about the same as a normally arse-pirated 300ZX biggrin.gif

Jaylox,

Are you sure its a 330CSI, and not a 330CI.

If its the CSI which I didnt think was out yet, this is a light weight coupe, with a highly tuned 3.0, basically the same spec at the old M3. In which case you might have trouble beating it as this car is faster than the M5 due to its lightweight.

If its a 330CI, I had one for two weeks, and you will leave it for dead, as they are real slow for a 3 litre.

some of you are thinking of the CSL???

That is totally tuned to the hilt, CF panels and 18 inch brakes (apparently?!?!)

anyway he probably aint got one of those, but if he has, oh boy id like him to take us for a spin in it smile.gif

Theres the ci, normal coupe type, and then theres the ci clubsport, which looks like an m3, with less power and similar suspension, with other gizmos missing

330 Csi, is aka, the ci sport

Hi Warren, yes it was a new model four exhausts on the back new shape, to say I'm chuffed is an understatement!

I once raced a new M5 on the way to gatwick with a mate.

Needless to say, had i lost, i wouldnt be typing this!

You sure? its called an M3 CSL, I dont even know if they've been made yet. The M3 CSL, would seriously waste zx's, dont think there is a 330 CSL, though.

There for sure is a 330 CSi, (Ci sport)

Do a search for 300 CSL, and see what come up.

This car is a concept car? They have not made it into production. It was designed as BMW were in the AMLS in america and needed a homolgated version. They pulled out of the series and this car never made production?

It an awesome piece of kit.

Thanks Warren, you just clarified what im trying to say, its a 2002 concept car, it is going into production soon ish, they are homologating it with a production run soon, apparently.
