turned out a not cheep clutch

ive done about 10 thousand miles since i got my tt. after the first thousand my gearbox started to whine abit. i thaught it was the clutch release bearing. it was gettin quite noisey now so i booked it in at nissans. turns out its not the clutch its the bearings in the box. they told me its a complete box strip with all new bearings.quoted me aprox£750. i pick it up wensday. my car has done 65 thousand.is it normal for this to happen or have i been unlucky? and the price sounds reasonable considering the work involved. what do you lot think?

Don't know if I am talking out of my bottom, but what a lot of people on the forum do is change the gearbox oil to redline MT90. This takes the whining away and stops the crunching between gears!

See if they have started work, if they haven't take it away and just change the oil

I think I need some of this redline MT90 stuff, where sells it?

Does the £750 include them removing and refitting the box?

If so doesn't sound too bad, there is a fair bit of work involved in stripping the gearbox and re-assembling it. Not terribly tricky but very time consuming.

Cheers,

Jezz.

Jezz and Dave,

The UK distributors of Redline in the UK are Delta Oil Europe, Linconshire. Call them on 01476861195.

I have dealt with them personally and the chap is really helpfull.

I bought 16 liters of F/S 10/30 and 2 quarts of MT-90.

The best lubes around IMHO smile.gif

Dave, for gods sake mate, take the car anywhere but Nelson if you can. Don't trust anything they say! All they want you to do is hand over large amounts of green for fuck all.

Where are you mate?

Give us a better idea of who can sort you out without the pain steak that is Nelson! They want a nuke up the arse for the way they treat 300 owners!!! FFS!!! wink.gif

Hi Dave, if you're in Peterborough are you using Arriva Nissan? Bob Ford?

Just one point - the MT90 trick is only recommended on boxes which are suffering with the synchros - in other words crunching between gears. This is a harsh oil and will cause your gearbox to wear prematurely - it is a last ditch effort on worn boxes wink.gif This is how I understand it anyways....

CheerZ,

Andy

Hi Andy,

I am a novice but I thought the redline MT90 was the correct viscosity, I thought it was the redline mt80 (I think thats the number) there were reports of premature wear.

Mark

Some blurb,

"...MT 90 - Manual Transmission/Transaxle Lubricant. A 75W90 GL-4 gear oil which is designed for manual transmissions which require 75W90, or 90 GL-4 gear oils or motor oils. Uses the same chemistry as MTL , but is a 90 WT in order to satisfy certain manufacturers which recommend SAE 90 GL-4 gear oils.

More from the bottle:

Red Line Synthetic MT-90 is specially designed for manual transmissions and transaxles. The relatively constant viscosity over a wide temperature range allows easier shifting and helps prevent whine and rattle at high temperatures. Most gear oils, ATFs, and motor oils are too slippery for proper synchro engagement - which causes gear clash when shifting. .... MT-90 has a coefficient of friction which is perfect for rapid synchro engagement and allows high-speed upshifting and downshifting. ... Petroleum multigrade motor oils and transmissions fluids contain polymers which shear down rapidly under the action of gear teeth and rapidly lose viscosity , significantly reducing their lubricating ability . Red Line MT-90 is shear stable and will retain its physical characteristics for extended periods. MT-90 meets gear oil viscosities SAE 75W, 80W, and 90 or motor oil viscosities SAE 40 or 15W40 and provides gear protection which satisfies API categories GL-3 and GL-4..."
