I have been gettin this unearthly smell in the car when I accelerate hard.

I think I know what it is but I am not sure. My car is an import auto n/a.

I think it is gear oil cooking, can anybody tell me what is the problem with the j spec coolers? I have been driving the car for 3 years with the j apec cooler on and I just hope the damage is not done.

as far as I know the j spec oil cooler is smaller than that of the uk one, i think most people get a new oil cooler, then run the j spec cooler for the gear oil alone, and use the new one for everything else, think there is a few threads on it somewhere.

Jspec cooler is built into the end tanks of the Water radiator. Its too small, and gets heatsoak from the Radiator and vice versa.

You can purchase a replacement oil cooler and either use that for the gearbox, or the popular setup of using the new cooler for the engine oil and the old engine oil cooler for the gearbox.

Are you sure you dont have a gearbox oil leak ? Smell is very distinctive.

The Jap spec auto box cooler is a plastic tank on one side of the main radiator, the UK spec uses a tank on each side of the radiator. I'm not convinced it does any cooling at all - after all the radiator is at 80+ deg C. I do wonder whether it is intended to get the autobox oil up to temperature quicker !.

Anyway, many people replace it with a 'proper' oil cooler.

The jap spec engine oil cooler is about half the size of the UK spec oil cooler.
