I had a search, but couldn't find an answer. Maybe it's so simple that nobody else needs to ask...

My Z has an old Blaupunkt Bremen radio-casstte head unit with a 10CD changer in the boot. The cables to the changer burnt out after a hot track session and I decided that was the cue to bin the changer and get a new head unit.

To keep it simple (I hoped  ) I stuck with Blaupunkt. I was worried that the connectors might be different, but the cocky kid in the electronics superstore assured me they were the same – just unplug the old, plug in the new.

So, finally, I found time to do this. Pull out the old and see straight away that they are NOT the same. Why am I not surprised?

Furthermore, the old unit has a brown cable going to a separate push-on connecter and I can't see where this should go in the new unit.

Back of new one with completely different sockets:

Can anyone tell me what to do? Is the old one not ISO? What adaptors do I need? Thanks!

There are adapters you can get (I think). Do a search on here as I'm sure it has been covered before. I'll have a gander as well.

Knew I'd seen it somewhere. Halfrauds do a connector.

Have a look a this Post

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but I'm just wondering exactly what connector I need though. The one on the car fits onto the top socket on the old Blaupunkt, so what type of connector is that – I would need to know to get an ""X" to ISO" adaptor?

Also, isn't that separate brown lead for the automatic electric aerial? The new unit doesn't have the same connector, so that will have to be wired into the socket, so it's certainly no simple "bang an adaptor on and you're sorted" type of problem...

I knew it wouldn't be as simple as it should be :(

With your new unit you should of received some paperwork (not just the instruction manual) In this you should have a wire code diagram. Do you?

Also did you receive a wire loom section to go into this socket? If not, and (as seen in the pic) it's obviously a different type of connector to standard, then that's a pretty pour show on their part, and personally I'd of taken it back. As what you already had was a standard ISO connector, and almost all manufacturers use these. As for your separate 'Brown' plug, i take it you mean the large spade crimp? If so I'd say this is almost definitely an Earth connector.

I've attached a Word document that shows you the wiring codes for the standard ISO connector, it might help you.

Thanks for the diagram – I had already found and downloaded that.

In the user's manual for the new Blaupunkt there are two pages of info:

Not quite sure what you mean by a "wire loom section to go into this socket" – but there were no plugs, or sections of wire enclosed with the unit :(

So this is an ISO connector? Row of five double pins?

This plugs into the old unit at the top right, so you are telling me that Blaupunkt used to have ISO connectors, but now don't. I notice that the unused middle socket is the same on both units – could this be what the salesman was talking about? That would appear to be the speaker outputs – on the new unit, at least.

As for your separate 'Brown' plug, i take it you mean the large spade crimp? If so I'd say this is almost definitely an Earth connector.

But aren't the other cables on the far left in this pic not also an earth connection – why a separate one for this brown cable? Or are those those on the left the power supply??? (You must realise that I don't know my arse from my elbow wrt car electrics :p ) Thing is, the new unit also has a similar big pole to attach those ring connectors to – and that has a big E next to it, so I assumed that it was an earth on both units???

Do you think the lower right socket has the same purpose on both units, so that I can just swap this over? It would appear to include the auto electric aerial activation signal (at A5 on the wiring diagram).

Trouble is, the old unit's user's manual, most helpfully  , does not include any wiring diagram or such info.

Any guesses which wires go where and to which sockets they should go on the new one?

A few more questions:

The wires that are in these connectors – are they just a push fit and held by an internal spring?

Can I just pull them out if I want to fit them into a different socket?

Surely there should be an adaptor if that is an ISO socket, so that I can go from ISO to whatever that new at the top on the Blaupunkt is?

I can see that this is going to end up costing lots of time, effort and, most probably, money!

HI bud,

Right a quick answer, as I've got to go to work soon......

1st, the bottom socket is a standard Power ISO one, so your original should be OK for this(But see 2, below). You can check the connectors go to the right places by using the diag you've already downloaded, and tracing them back to the original cars loom. It is a simple job, so just take your time and do one at a time.

2nd, I believe that the middle socket is a standard Speaker ISO one, so a standard Speaker ISO plug will fit it, but I don' think you have one of these, as the other one is a row longer. You're best bet here is to nip into Halfords and buy an ISO adaptor loom section (it has the two ISO FEMALE plugs at one end, and bare wires the other, which are marked as to where they go), disconnect the ones you have at the moment, and fit the two new ones in their place. This way you'll know everything is correct.

3rd, as for the EARTH connectors........ The spade one will probably go into the loom and be joined to the wire for connector 8 on plug A at some point, once you fit a new Power ISO loom plug, you'll do away with this one.The other two, the one with the red crimp on has been fitted by a previous owner, and will go to something else that requires an Earth. The other one (with the black fibre tape round it) is the original 300ZX Earth wire. Just re-fit these two to the threaded bar, as per originally.
