Why Is Microsoft So Crap!

Just formatted and installed Win2000 from fresh.

Great about 450mb fully installed. Miles away from the original 7.5mb of Windows 3.11 and even Windows 95 could be cut to about 20mb.

But why after 450mb of installation, do I have to download over 100mb of service packs, and when installed make the Windows directory over 800mb. Then you install security pathces over 50mb, making the directory bigger, then its install Explorer 6, then its the patches for explorer 6, then its Windows Media Player 7, then the patches for the player. WTF!!!!

Would it not be simpler to download and install an upto date copy of Windows straight from the internet.

I have spent an hour formatting and installing Windows, and then another hour and half installing all the updates patches for it. Thank God I have broadband.

Next I have to install MS Office XP, and then its the 100mb of service pack for that and then the patches. Then I have to install MS Developer and then the 80mb service pack for that. The service packs and patches end up bigger than the original programs.

It just goes to show that Microsoft release products with the attitude of "Release it now, we will fix it later!"

So then Dump Microsoft and go to Another OS with all the products, support, ect ect lol

Oh hang on there isint another one wink.gif (not sure whos fault that is)

You could go to linex which is apparently a 1000times better, yet still nto as big as Microsoft os. (cant figure that one out iether)

Stuart, which SP level of Win2k are you using? If you apply the service packs as service packs and not updates, then you have the option not to keep the old files - you don't get this with updates as it keeps backups for uninstall.

You need to find the latest service packs and download them if you want to keep the install size to a minimum - then when you install them do not make a backup to restore... MS are up to SP2 now for Win2k...

Aye Andy. SP2 for Windows 2k. SP2 for Office XP, and service pack 2 for MS Developer.

I aint bothered about the size. Just saying that there is more patch data than there is original data.

Glenn I had XP before it officially came out. Ran the update and SP1 was out, even before it offically came out in this country.

...because it's not Apple! wink.gif

Soon as my car is back I'm buying an iMac and then I'm gonna burn my shite CrapTop!!! mad.gif

That'll be mostly FreeBSD then Mr P!!! I don't have a problem with that bud. Why do you think I spend so much time on here during the week? As me and Latz were laughing about last night, Unix is so rock solid that you never have to touch it unlike MicroShaft which can't even shutdown or bootup cleanly FFS! ROFLMFAO biggrin.gif

Id like to try mac OS X, shame its ona mac though smile.gif

I run a company on Linux and although its more stable than Windows things still do go wrong, the benifit though is that they are easy to diagnose and fix,

I wouldn't recommend Linux for the desktop for a new user though, I've been using Linux since 1995 and I still don't run it on my Desktop, XP is too fucking good

I agree, Linux is inappropriate for the normal desktop user but it does have its place. It's also not as robust as many people would like us to believe.

Regarding Mac OS X, its not worth all the hype. I used it and its interface (Aqua) is nice but what struck me was that Microsoft has caught up and well and truly passed Mac OS with Windows XP. I've only had XP crash a couple of times and I've used it a hell of a lot. You can completely lock up a Mac by putting in a copy protected music CD FFS! Some people are having to send their machines back to Apple for fixing. Doesn't seem very reliable to me!

BTW, I am a Mac fan and I still have 2 in my house (before anyone starts accusing me of being anti-Mac). And the iPod is lovely biggrin.gif

p.s. RISC OS is still the best OS on earth wink.gif
