Recently ordered the satellite version of broadband from BTOpenWoe myself. Costs a bit more than the copper version, but there again there's no chance of that where I live and also I ain't paying !

I tried to get broadband with NTL recently. I know they are not the best but since I have an NTL line I am unable to subscribe to the likes of Pipex etc who need a BT line. NTL told me that the only way to get broadband was to subscribe to the full cable tv package, I explained that I already have sky digital with a dish and just wanted broadband, they said that they could not help me. Looks like I’m going to have to change back to BT.

Steve,

I had BT ADSL but moved house and after 3 visits they couldn't get it working at my new address even though it was in an area where it should work - because its a year contract I am still having to pay for it even though I cant use it! frown.gif

Signed up with NTL as it's my only option and it is faster than my ADSL was but the TV is shite compared to Sky which I cancelled.

The program guide is absolutely useless and I end up just watching the first few channels which defeats the object of having it frown.gif

How much is the satellite service? A customer of mine is interested in that.

errh, forgive me for mentioning this but satellite broadband is sort of what I do. Ish.

The BT Openworld service is being delivered over "our" satellites (in this context "our" means www.eutelsat.com and the other site is www.beyondsl.net - a really good two-way service is www.aramiska.com )

There is also to be a subsidy from some RDAs to SMEs in their area to get broadband.

Anyhow, I don't really want to come over the sales heavy on this forum but if anyone wants to e-mail me direct, I can give you chapter and verse.

(the first satellite internet platform I built went live in Feb 1998 and lasted more than24 hours!

Cheers - Gio

Well as long as it's only your satellites and not you providing the install service etc, because I ain't got it yet and have already complained about the ordering process once and will be doing so again unless someone contacts me el pronto !

I was just about to order broadband but have found the the Freeserve offering has a minimum term of 12 months and can't be transferred if you move house. And Pipex charge £50 +vat to cancel if you move house.

Anyone know any decent providers which I can take with me when I move house (which I will be doing within the next 6 months) ?

Dave

AndyP - mobile is 07767 248688. I am at the very boring Mediacast show talking complete bollocks about broadband etc.

Call after 10am if you want and I can give chapter and verse.

Hairsy - yep, that's what they do. Even some satellite providers. The hybrid system only uses a dish to receive so providers don't care where you are.

This means that if you move, just take the dish down and then get it put up again where you end up.

Cheers - Gio

Gio,

Is a separate dish or can they make use of the Sky dish ? Sorry if that's a stupid question !

Cheers

Dave

Dave,

It's a separate dish. Eliptical rather than round apparantely.

It could be offered on the 28.2 / 28.5 satellites (i.e. what you get on your digital Sky dish) but no service launched on these yet for the UK.

So you need 2 dishes (if you already have Sky) which "officially" needs planning permission - or a multiple feed dish or a motorised dish.

If you are just after internet access, you can put up a dish aimed at the right satellite - which depends on which service provider you want to use.

If I get time at the weekend, I will post a flow chart and some pics somewhere.

Cheers - Gio
