no its not next door's cat!

only happens on occasion, and when the weathers especially cold. after about a minute of driving, i get a constant whirring/whining noise from under the car, difficult to pinpoint from where exactly, at first it sounds like the rear wheels, but im sure its a little closer in. only happens when in gear and under accelleration. after about 30 seconds, the noise will go away. there isnt anything else noticable, like juddering etc., just the noise. any suggestions?

its from the middle, id say somewhere between gearbox and rear seats. deffo something to do with drivetrain/diff. not checked diff oil levels yet will get round to that soon.

does the noise appear at the same or certain speed?

appears between 30-40mph - only lasts about 30 seconds then its gone till the next cold morning.

could be a prop bearing or possibly something worse like a gearbox problem... is it manwell or auto?

man-unwell. its been like this for well over a year - but only makes the noise when its really cold - it does it about 10 mornings per year (generally around winter) so fingers crossed its nothing too major. i though about prop bearing but there's no associated judder so i ruled that one out
