Ive finally got round to having the funding to revive the Z. Ive had the cursed water pump replaced and the car has sat for a good couple of months. I started it today with no problem and it ran smoothly at a normal idle. Trouble is, there is a knocking coming from the rear of the engine which I don't like the sound of. Im hoping that its just because its not had a good run or service for a while. Trouble is, it did overheat for a while before I had the pump diagnosed. It was turned off straight away and not driven but I have heard bad stories about this. Any thoughts? Please try not to se[ress me too much though!

It's hard to give advise when you can't hear the noise. Give it a service, oil change etc... and give her a nice long easy drive. Keep an eye on gauges (temp/oil pressure) and see how you go.

can you be a bit more spercific as to where the knocking is coming from, you say the rear but top or bottom of the engine? Are you sure its not a tapping from a lazy lifter as its been sat for a while?

Get yourself a long thin hollow metal tube, like that of an aerial, and attach some soft rubber to it. put something comfy on the other end of the rubber tube so you can put it in your ear. If you can find one, a doctors stethoscope will do nicely. Then poke the end of it around the engine and listen. you can probably find where the knock is the loudest and deduce from there the issue.

Thanks all. It sounds like its coming from the rear of the bay somewhere. I'm pretty sure its not a tappet style noise though as its too loud. Its def a strange one as it obviously follows the revs up and down. I know it needs a good run and a service as its been sat but it only started after I had the new pump fitted. I don't really want to go driving round (hopefully soon) only to do more damage.

I have also noticed that this only seems to happen when the engine is warmed up. Started from cold it seems to be normal.

get the oil changed. with a good quality synthetic like silkolene 15w 50 or miller etc and try again.

Shall try that ASAP and report back.

Just realised that I can't change the oil cos the car is sat on my drive and is too low to get under! Whoops!

havent you got a jack. jack up the passenger side as the oil drains from the drivers side.
