Anyone got any advice on tinting your windows. Is it easy to do yourself?

Who the hell is Frank? If you hadn't guessed that was a 'no'.

As Kim said, get a professional to do it, they can advise you the legal limits around tints too.

Soz mate its just that I saw a car the exact same as this the other week in Franks body shop having a new concept bumper fitted and stuff that was all. One of the guys in this club does window tinting ok

Just noticed the side skirts mate and they are westwing so my mistake mate as the car in Franks had the full concept body kit with side skirts and rear bumper. Talk to Tweaky about window tinting ok

Someone else obviously has good taste then. :)

If your wanting to tint your door windows, dont!. any tint you put on them is likely to make them illegal. If stopped with them you could end up with points a fine plus having to remove them. front side windows must let through at least 70% light, your car probably is already tinted to about 20% so youve only got 10% to play with, I dont think theres any 10% tints out there and even if there was they wouldnt be worth bothering about

word of warning, i thought it was a great idea to get all the windows bar the windscreen tinted by a professional. He did a great job but not only did it look cheap, I kept mis-judging distances of oncoming traffic because of the dark windows. I took it all off after a couple of days bar the rear window, that does look sweet and you can't see anything out of it anyway.

When my slicktop came over on the boat from japan it had the rear and side back windows done aready ,but badly the rear had been done in strips with joins down the back window .A local company in colchester removed old film and done a pro job of fitting new film i belive this guy does work for bmw /mini etc .It wasnt cheap £220 for 3 windows remove and fit.

i have just had my rear screen and side rear quarters limo tinted professionally (albeit at mates rates ;)) awesome job and tbh witht the rear professionally done it gives the illusion that the front is smoked anyway..

so chuffed really makes it look mean.. lol

as a window tinter myself i can tell you it is completely illegal to have any film/tint on your front drop windows!

however i do have a 35% tint all round, currrent penalties are are 30quid fine but no penalty points, you will also be required to remove the tint.

pics below,

A bit of legislation I found.

Think it is unfair to make you remove tints though if you already have them.

Bit like making cars without rear seat belts have to fit them despite the fact they were made that way.

Window Tinting - Amendments to legislation

During the early part of 2004, Section 32 of the Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations will be amended to include “Window Tint Films” where such materials attached to the glass are capable of reducing the visible light transmission of forward windows to below prescribed levels (70% VLT for front side windows). These changes will be back-dated to become applicable from 1st January 2004.

This will effectively ban the practice in future of applying virtually any tinted films to windows forward of the B-Post on any vehicle that is to be driven on UK roads.

The reasons for these changes is the recent proliferation of vehicles that are excessively tinted. Some vehicles may be so heavily tinted that they present a real danger when used on public roads. The action being taken by the Government follows a fatality that occurred recently where a heavily tinted car was involved in a collision with a motorcycle and the window tints were held to blame due to the vision of the driver being impaired.

There is, however, a recognized difference between “light window tints” which may be considered safe for road use and “excessively dark window tints” which are not.

There has also been a great deal of debate in recent years about the legitimacy of window tints that do not obscure the vision of the driver. A clear case has been argued that road-safe window tints do not actually conflict with existing regulations. The Department of Transport have argued however, that Section 32 was always intended to cover materials attached to the glass, despite the fact that no mention of this is made in the Regulation itself. The only solution remaining would be to amend the Legislation.

Consequently and in order to clarify the solution the Government have finally decided to up-date the Regulations to specifically include Tinted Films since, in the view of the Police and the Department of Transport, this is the only way in which the problems of excessive tints can be remedied.

Unfortunately however, even tint films that maybe considered to be safe for road use will now be viewed as in conflict with the Regulations, enabling the Police and Vehicle Inspectorate to take action against vehicle owners.

This has significant implications for the owners of vehicles that have window tints and also those that are responsible for installing or selling window tints.
