Hi,

Decided to fit the Uk spec rear belts to the back of my ZX today.

Everything was fine until I came to bolt the first belt in.

The belt's mechanism keeps locking and I can't figure out how to stop the belt retracting and locking in place permanently!

I took the yellow lever mechanism off the side of the reel, to have a look at that and the belt runs free... but nothing seems to stop it locking...as soon as I reattach it?

Any ideas...???

Cheerz,

Jez

Is it fully bolted in place?

Have you tried swaping the units over?

If you've not tried the above, then they could be faulty!!

Mine was only a pita to pull out before it was bolted in place then it just seems to retract and pull out really easy.

Are they fitted on the correct sides ? From my limited knowledge of inertia reel seatbelts they have a latch that's based on gravity - if they're mounted the wrong way up then they may not work.

Hi,

Both the inertia reels are the same...should there be left and right handed reels?

I 've only bolted in the left hand side so far...perhaps I've got two right handed reels if thats possible?

also make sure when you fit them they are level, if they are slightly at an angle and they can give problems with the mechanism sticking

Hi,

The rear reels fit into the wing at an angle, but I only have a large bolt for the lower fixing...looks like there should be a screw or clip to hold the top of the reel too....perhaps this is my problem?

Hi my reels look the same, but I've been fitting one to the left side of the car, so the locking mechanism is facing down, rather than up.

TBH I can't remember if they look different myself, as it's been a while since I fitted mine (and that pic isnt my Zed)

Hi,

Thanks for the help guys....

Well it looks like I'm missing a couples of screws to hold the top of the inertia reels in place.

I'll have another look at the weekend and see if it makes any difference.

At least I've got the trim drilled for the top mounting and the lower trim ready to reinstall.

The other side shouldn't take too long to do, now I know vaguely what I'm doing! ;)

Cheerz,

Jez

I also found out mate if on the lower trim where the belt crosses it mark it both sides with a pencil and pull the vynyl back a bit and using side cutters cut away a 5mm strip between the pencil marks and then fold back the vinyl over it and the seat belts run through them great without the use of the plastic trim plates if you have not got them. p.s you can pick up self tapping screws at any hardware store to do the job.

Hi,

Finally managed to fit the seatbelts today!

Once the upper self tapping screw was in place, the belt reel runs free and locks as it should.

The reels are right and left handed, as when I compared the two together, I could see that the locking mechanism was angled differently.

Thanks for the advice!
