Thinking of getting an orbital buffer and claybar to get rid of fine swirls etc.

anyone recommend a good one but not too expensive :)

I bought one of them £15 ones from B&Q - total toss

Thinking its gonna cost more like £50.

Im new to all this super polished look - always just washed car and put some wax on when its warm :)

Now I wanna get a deep shine - I hear meguiars is good - I have some carnuba wax of theirs but when I tried it it made no difference - Ive tried black T-Cut but that didnt work either.

I was gonna try a claybar and then use a buffer on it.

While we're on the subject, how easy is it to keep the pads clean or do you need to buy new ones every time you polish the car off?

I use a tek pol variable speed one , the foams can be reused if cleaned after polishing , if you let the glaze sit and dry the foams start to dry brittle and come apart, remember use a harder foam for scratch removal and a softer one for a high polish finish

clay is good but wont remove the swirl marks, they just remove grained in surface contamination and should be used inbetween machine treatments to keep the paint finish glasslike

It seems that a very popular polish for removing swirl marks is Menzerna PO106FF. I am currently using a Spear & Jackson rotary buffer to good effect, but they can be a bit vicious and burn lacquer if you don't know what you're doing. I will be investing in a Porter Cable random orbital buffer as soon as I can (these are raved about in detailing circles as they can't damage paint) and I may be able to offer assistance/services to members when I have it :)

For a good deep shine on black paint, I would recommend preparing the surface using Auto Glym Super Resin Polish (which is packed with silicone fillers to mask swirls) and then topping with at least one coat of Poorboy's Natty's Blue wax, preferably 2 coats 24 hours apart.

I did that on the wifes car today and this is a reflection shot of my Z in her door panel:-

yeah the burn in can be a problem thats why i advised wet polishing to dry, problem is with silicon fillers is that a month down the line the swirls are showing again.

Oh, no doubt mate. But for those that don't wanna tackle swirl removal themselves, using SRP is a good start :)

porter cable all the way, ive seen a few cars done with these and the results never fail to impress.

I use a good orbital polisher with 3m machine glaze then if I want a deep shine 2 coats of p21 carnubia wax

I use 3M it is great. Well worth the money and defo a top tip.....
