Hi ya ppl!! I am new to the site and also the first time owner of a 300zx I have had it since last november on short journey's and when going slow (not often) the car really smells of petrol so much so it makes my bird feel sick. Any idea's if there could be a fault that can be dealt with or is it just due to the pigmy under the bonnet throwing bucket fulls of fuel down the injectors.

P.S does everyone out there have bad headlights like mine i've heard all Z drivers have to use the force to drive at night.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!!!!! :headvswal

Dip beam is crap your a zed driver so let the force be with you also you have a fuel system fault so don't mix up the power of the force with sniffing petrol.

thanks for your reply i guess a tune up's in order i'll stick to high beam most ppl are normally left behind anyway!!!!!! U KNOW!!!!!! cheers

youve either got perished fuel lines mate

or your temp sensor has gone and your overfueling the engine

There are no visible leaks or perished pipes I dont really know alot about the Z engine don't really wanna waste money at monkey garages trying to find the fault! where is the temp sensor.....lol

More likely the fuel lines, If temp sensor had gone then the car wouldn't run. right over rev's

I agree if the sensors not correct the engine will not run well. It could be the pipes or connectors or the fuel regulator or the carbon canister system (which may have been removed this will make it smell).

It will be the short fuel line connecting the two fuel rails.

Remove the throttle cable central plastc cover.

Look down at the front, beneath the plenum, just behind the timing belt covers, under the throttle cable linkage.

Shine a torch closely on the ends whie engine is running to check for leaks.

Check all these connections and small hoses:

I advise you buy Smithys braided hose kit to eliminate the faded bit in the pic.

olliezx!!! that's fantastic mate cheers for that i'll get onto it tomorrow and thanks to everyone else for your help hopefully after this is sorted my bird will only feel sick from speed rather than fuel!! Thanks again I think im going to like it here!!!

This may sound a little dumb and basic but need to ask as I had a bad petrol smell from mine when I got it in November, got all the fuel lines checked (etc) but nothingwas wrong.

Which Fuel are you using?

The garage put standard unleaded in mine, not super and that was causing the smell. Same happened last month when my dad filled it up with unleaded, smell came back until I used it and filled it back up with Vpower, no smell.

Only ever use standard (Tesco whoops) I'll check my pipes if no joy i'll change my fuel hey ho what's another couple of quid on petrol when you got a TT.......lol Thanks

When you say 'you got it checked' are you sure they checked everything? Some are easy to miss. Just a thought.

How can the type of petrol you use cause a smell?!

All petrol smells the same and if you can smell it it's leaking out plain and simple!

If it's a cold day the pipes will contract and make leaks appear.

If it's bad enough to be making you feel sick you need to get it sorted before the car goes up in flames!

Do a search on here for fuel leaks and you'll get loads of info.

The most common one is under the fuel pressure regulator in the pic above but you need to tighten all the clips on the fuel lines.

You won't see the leak as it evaporates so quickly so put talc on the pipes before you start it up and you'll see where it is.

Easiest fix is to buy one of Smithy's braided fuel line kits as it replaces most of the joins and will sort out your problem once and for all.

When i first got my Zed i had the same problem and I posted on here and got the answer.

Bassicly just try and tighten all the clamps on the fuel lines

I took my car for a drive, lifted the bonet and i found fuel burning itself off on the engine, the clamp on the fuel line turned 2 times, and fixed it

Smithy sells a fuel line kit. Do yourself a massive favor and buy one. It will most prob stop the leak, and even if it doesnt it will stop the leak that will happen at some point with teh stock fuel lines. Plus its the cheapest upgrade your gona do.

Mine was smelling of petrol too, especially when turned the heater blower on, turned out to be the fuel canister near the end of balance bar.
