I'm taking everything down to the engine shop Monday.

I'm also having it balanced and knife edged.

This is what they have requested:

Heads, valves, springs.

Clutch cover, Flywheel, bolts.

Crank

Rods and pistons

Manifolds and gaskets.

I don't have the manifolds yet and i told them this and they said they could make do but........ does it mean it wont be as good job as they can't match them? and what does this actually mean?

Also i havn't recieved my new springs yet, my mechanic said to supply the old ones, would this be ok and why do they need the valves and springs anyway?

You need to give them you crankshaft pulley too. The crankshaft pulley, crank, flywheel and clutch cover will all be bolted together and balanced as one unit.

They will port the head to the inlet/exhaust gaskets, i.e open the exhaust port to the same size as the port hole in the gasket, if you don't supply the manifolds at the same time, you'll have a "step", as the manifold will not be ported, causing a restriction as the gasses enter the manifold.

I take it your having heads gas-flowed, in which case the head has to assembled with the valves in place for testing on a flow bench.

Hope this helps

Stock manifold ports are larger than the gasket - this is actually a good thing as the step will reflect any pulses trying to flow back into the head....

DHL picked up a wopping great big box for me today bud which contains some nice Mike smith Manifolds, amongst other things ;) due with me around Monday mate.

Wow, really??

ooo... i might really upset mark if i postpone but it will make sense.

Smithy i'll call you later this morning, i don't suppose you have any carbon clutches in stock?

I really can't see the point having the old clutch/flywheel balanced with the crank and pully as Keith said above i'll have to forget about the rims for now and get that all done.

Thanks for the info guys, i kinda follow you hehe.

Isn't gas flowing the same or a different term for polish and porting?

I did ask for polish, port and gas flow but they refered to it as polish and port.

Port and polish can be just that, opening the ports and a gentle polish.

Gas flowing is more involved, using a flow bench enables you to check and improve the flow and swirl,

more swirl= better air-fuel mixing, better mixture= better combustion, which in turn will produce more horsepower.

More material will be remove from the ports as you want to maximise air flow and mixture to give the maximum hp gain.

If it was me, I'd ask for a three -angle valve seat cut too, to improve the flow into the combustion chamber. This used to be standard practise when flowing, but that was a while ago.

This is Criminal just too the engine down to the engine shop and my estimate has jumped up from £750ish - £1020 rar rar rar.....

That was for polish porting, gas flow, 3 angel valve set. Crank knife edge and all the engine parts balanced.

The first estimate was over the phone and the other one was in person, nothing has changed so didn't really understand why the price has and so much??? youchie.

Well it's got to be done otherwise i'll never be happy with it.

TBH mate I imagine they gave you a price for a 'normal' V6 engine and when they looked at the VG they got a bit of a shock and had to up the price.
