My mate bought an old clio off a mate of his. Unfortunately the car has been sitting there and is not taxed or mot'd.

Anyway he wants to tax it but can't as he needs the mot.

But is he allowed to drive it to the station? I know the mot rules are that you can drive to an mot station but how about tax?

Cheers.

As far as i know, as long as he has a booked appointment, then

yes, he is allowed to drive it, providing it is insured.

But, as usual.... i stand to be corrected! ;)

So you reckon that goes for tax as well?

I should also add...

I'm trying to convince him to get insured on it FIRST since if he gets pulled and he tells them of the mot/tax problem they may be sympathetic. Whereas if he also adds 'oh and I'm not insured' they would not be so sympathetic.

Anyway lets say he's not insured, would I be able to drive it and use my third party cover when driving a friends car that my fully comp provides?

nope coz your only insured on other cars as long as they're tax'd nd mot'd, but if ur mate insures the car he can drive it to the test station then to get tax :D

This is my understanding too.

I mean, say you SORNed your car for a year to do some restoration work and whilst off the road, the MOT expired. You would have to drive it to the MOT station, surely?

I also think there is a sentence on the bottom of a road tax application that asks when the last RFL expired and when you want the new RFL to start. It asks you to explain any gap between the two and declare the car was not used on a public road. IIRC driving to a pre-booked MOT is the only allowable exception.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yes, I believe he would also be insured to drive to/from the MOT test station. It may be prudent to mention that to the insurance company.......

......as for RFL, whilst it is law to buy the tax disc I don't recall anything that says you're not insured if the RFL runs out - don't know that for sure though........ Afterall if you had the car stored off road, you may still maintain insurance cover in case it gets stolen or catches fire. You wouldn't need RFL to validate insurance then ;)

No MOT and you're not insured because that has some implication as to the car's roadworthiness.

Righteyo thanks a lot for all that. I'll just make sure he gets insured then.

Al

he can whack trade plates on from the garage thats MOT'ing it.... and he'll be allowed to drive!

He'll have to drive to the garage to get the plates though probably ;)

I think all shall be ok just as long as he sorts his insurance.

he can't use the garage trade plates unless he's employed by them and then it's only in certain circumstances.
