Anyone out there when rebuilding an engine ever sleeved it? If so where did you get the sleeves from and what type?

My predicament is that the 3sgte is 86mm bore as std, some who have bored out to 86.5 have ended up with crackd blocks. This may be just down to poor mapping at the end of the day, however i'd like to avoid. I'm either going to go for 86.25 pistons, or have sleeve fitted and go with 86 mm. I was just wondering if anyone out there had any experience of using liners on any car, it doesnt look like anybody bothers on the vg30 so i'm presuming you have plenty of wall to tunnel in to.

personally before boring out i would have the cylinder walls sonically depth checked to make sure, i have also heard of having some of the water channels filled to give further strength to the sidewall

As far as I am concerned (and here comes the bit where you can all piss on my fire) all bores are linners. The block is machined to accept a liner weather it is dry or wet, wet meaning it forms part of the water jacket and needs to be sealed at both ends to stop water entering the cylinders.

So with that in mind if your bores are fubar, then a good machine shop should be able to pull the liners and replace with new.

Not all blocks have liners, also fitting liners to blocks that don't normally have them can cause problems I have seen a CA slip a liner (non linered block) and it took the block when the engine went.

I would look around and definitely talk to a few engine builders first, check if Darton make some as well as they are know to be the best. I have a set of 86mm Darton Sleves getting bored out to 92mm on my 200sx (darton approved this over bore as well)

Nope VG30 doesn't have liners for a start....

My Vg30 has panty liners underneath to catch the leaking oil!! so a vg30 can have liners   :p

sleeving is a last resort and very expensive.as far as im aware ive never heard of home sleeving kits.sleeves are not car specific but ordered by size and machined by an engine shop to fit then bored .most engines can take a .5 overbore and the manufacturer will state the oversizes in their manual.if you have any doubts on the condition of your block have the machine shop run a mercer gauge down the bores to check for uneven wear.the pots may be in tolerance and just need honing.
