Hi. Currently carrying out an auto to manual conversion. I'm lifting out the engine also. I have a 1990 J spec auto TT I understand that the auto turbo's are different to the manuals, presuming the auto's are smaller so they spin up faster. Is it worth changing the auto tubs for manual ones?

Yes Auto turbo's are smaller for the quicker spool time.

To be honest I doubt you will notice much difference for the ammount of time, money and work you would need to put in changing the turbo's over. Be MUCH better to upgrade to aftermarket turbos if you gonna do it.

definatly :nana2:

The smaller turbos were put there to make the make the performance the same as the manual.

If you changed them to bigger ones it would probably spool up slower and actually reduce performance.

The auto is quicker to 100mph than the manual.

If you want more power then go for some bigger upgraded turbos :)

The manual has a more aggresive inlet cam profile to suit the turbo gearing, which is why it has less torque at lower revs, but a little extra back end of mid range.

I think ,but if I'm wrong someone will correct me that the Auto is about 0.2 of a second faster at 5.7 seconds. (Disclaimer for the forum Police) My memory could have invented that though.

(My opinion though) I think Manual is much more fun to drive hard on the twisty's.

I thought the manual was quicker to 60 (as you can do silly clutch destroying starts) but the auto beats it on to 100...

Who knows, I can't be arsed checking but I know the 0-100 auto thing is definately a Z fact :)

Also the auto is geared for 201mph if you have enough power but the manual will "only" get to 196 ish?

All this is irrelevant as the auto box will die 6 months after you buy the car anyway

PMSL  Manual is quicker to 60 but auto quicker to 100. Probably due to 3rd gear running out just before 100 and having the extra gear change. Shame because 3rd is the best gear it pulls like a ****in train! Just those extra few mph would be nice tho...

i had an manwell conversion and kept the auto tubs and TBH you wont notice any difference. [youll be enjoying throwing the gear lever around too much! ]

yep i wish mine was manual but for the price i paid i cant complain =)

I have the full manual conversion kit available if your interested.

Cheers

Andy how much would Manual Tubs slow an Auto down? if any?

Me and Greg both have manual tubs on an Auto Engine/box but i am not sure if i can feel much difference but i could be wrong! ;)

Not much really, in fact, auto tubs on a manual will probably see a better 0-60 times due to higher torque. Top end will be slightly less but not much :)

I have Manual Tubs on an Auto Engine and box.

I thought it was slightly more laggy and full boost is higher up the Rev range  A bit disapointed when i had a 2006 Z4 up my ass (2 car lengths) the other day on the M27 had him right up my ass (he was trying to push me which annoyed me) untill i got over 120 then i started to leave him in the Horizon.

I was very gutted as i know the Engine is very good after i rebuilt it fully.

So i was getting the Feeling maybe putting Manual Tubs on could have been a bad idea?

It is not running standard boost either and I am running a Central 20 chip as well with Greddy trust stainless full system

It certainly felt alot quicker when i had auto Tubs and that was with a Knackered engine.

The fact that most of the solenoids aren't working wouldn't help ;) (the ones of *that* fuse lol)

I did break one the the metal tubes on one of my original solenoids so i was going to by pass both of them by rerouting the vacuum hoses, but i bought a second hand one and fitted that instead! Maybe its a faulty one possibly!

I must admitt i have not been paying much attention to the Secondary boost gauge?

I have been driving like a granny since i fitted this engine! Apart from the other day on the M27 :D

That was the first time i have booted it in 3 months ;)

Are the soleniods open (activated) with voltage present when Engine running or open with no voltage engine running ie if i disconnected the connectors would they be closed or open?

Or maybe i should do the simple bypass??

Forgive the questions Andy as i have been ill this week and have not been able to do any tests! (nothing to do with beer either) so this is just tech info for when i do go out to fix this issue ;)

Disconnected would be closed - ie 7psi safety boost levels. Thats assuming the solenoids haven't jammed open....
