Hi all, someone used the wrong nut when putting my started motor back on and has ruined the thread, never had to tackle anything like this before, does the stud come out and can I get a replacement from Nissan? if it does how do I go about getting it out and replacing it, any help gratefully received, Richard.

Hi Richard

Is it too bad to run a die with some cutting paste over the threads? Or perhaps run a smaller die over it and use another nut?

Havent seen it so I dont know it either will work, just an idea!

How are ya anyway? Back in Ipswich for the week then back to Reading til Sept.

Hi Andrew, not too bad thanks, does anyone know what size die I need to do this, would start off going over it with the standard size then go smaller if needed, I could give it a go as there is nothing to loose.

If you have the correct nut, take it to a place that sells taps and dies and compare them to the nut. Usually come in various cuts, 3 usually. Start off with the smallest cut to remove the least material, then No2 then No3.

If you dont have cutting paste, oil will be fine. Sometimes I wish I carried on with my fitting and turning job!

The end screwed into the casting is a M10 x 1.50 (standard meteric) but I thick the outside end is metric fine 1.25 or 1.00 pitch so a die will cost a bit more. I fitted allen bolts in it makes getting the stater off easier.

Remove the stud and replace with a bolt, or remove the stud and take it to an autofactors, they should be able to match one up for you :)

Remove the stud and replace with a bolt

Cheers Andy, I have never had to remove a stud before, is it just a case of gripping it tight with molgrips and turning?

Richard - had the same with my red Z - looks like its common. I just fitted a slightly larger bolt. It cut it's own way in - and stayed there for the remaining 5 years I had the car.

Good luck

Hi Jack, it certainly does seem to be a common problem I did a search on it earlier, for me its the nut not the bolt that the problem as a Zed specialist   put a coarse threaded nut on when it should have been fine thread, I like andyduff's idea of taking the stud out and using a bolt but just need to find out whats the easiest way of getting it out.

A set of stud removers does the job nicely :D If not then either grip and undo or get 2 nuts the same, tighten one against the other on the thread and use the inner one to undo....

Only prob with using a bolt is that its harder to mount the starter - with the stud you can just hang it on then put the bolt in the bottom, without you need to hold it in place while you do it....
