Not really sure where to put this since its nowt to do with the zed...

Anyway since I've installed my new speakers in the car I'm left with 4 old speakers.

Has anyone had any experience with using car speakers in the house?

I'm thinking I might make some boxes for them and attach them to the walls of my computer room.

No reason why you shouldn't, the only thing you need to consider is the impedence. Car speakers are usually 16ohms whereas home speakers are 8ohms. As long as you are using them with a reasonable source there shouldn't be a big problem. It ain't going to be audiophile quality but for background music it should be ok.

my bro did it the other way round.... home speakers in the car! pmsl.... what a nutter!

He has one of the nissan hardbody's.... stuck the speakers behind the seats - you cant see them - but certainly can hear them!

So dont see why it wouldnt work the other way round!

Would be interesting to know and see how you do it! Good luck!

can someone explain what the ohms means i dont get what differance is between say 8ohms and 16 ohms

An ohm is a resistance in a conductor that produces a potential difference of one volt when a current of one ampere is flowing through it.

I've been using them today. Making a box out of mdf but not finished yet. I've got them standing up like phot frames right now and they sound ok. I think I could do with a bit more bass though so could do with a sub ;) Maybe I coukd put a car amp on the wall too.

The car one I have are 4 ohm and the home ones were 6 ohm.

Gonna try and use my old rears for surround sound but since these speakers are 2-3 way its a bit complicated when doing things without researching first!

Most home amps are designed for 8 Ohm speakers but they will drive 4 Ohm loads. It will definately run hotter. I set up a system in work which drives three 8 Ohm speakers in parallel (6 Ohms) and those amps do cut out when we play music loud through them! I'm thinking of doing the same with an old 18" 400W speaker, but I've also got neighbours  .

so if a set of speakers are 100 watts and one set 8 ohms and one 16 ohms would there be any differance or is it just the type of amp you would need

dead easy. you have half the ohms... use twice the speakers. sounds silly but its true and works. cant remember if you have to wire them in parallel or series but its one or the other.

hmm... must try to remember...

If your amp is designed for 8 Ohms and you have two 16 Ohm speakers, you would need to wire them in parallel to get the impedance down to 8 Ohms. If your two speakers were 4 Ohms, then you could wire them in series to get the impedance up to 8 Ohms. This is assuming one channel (mono) of course!

so what if i had an amp that is 8 ohm and i put 16 ohm speakers on it, is more or less ohms better for power

For best efficiency the speaker impedance must be matched to the amplifier impedance. Standard home amplifiers are 8 Ohm so 2 x 4 Ohm speakers connected in series on each channel are required. Modern home surround amplifiers run at 6 Ohms - 2 x 4 Ohm speakers in parallel connected in series with one 4 Ohm speaker. This is pretty much a :nono: To do it properly you'd need an impedance matching transformer. Yes the amplifiers will work with non matched impedances but at much higher temperatures and failure is much more likely, especially when running at high volumes. In other words, don't be such a ****in cheapskate, buy some proper home speakers, they're not that expensive! Car speakers are for CARS, home speakers are for.... yes..... you guessed it..... HOME  ;)

I hear what you're saying but I didn't want to use them because I had no speakers. I'm replacing some perfecty good 'normal' speakers with car speakers as I wanted to make a wedge from mdf to place the speakers in to place them high on a wall angled down at me. I've done it now and they're working ok. The sound isn't as good as the home speakers but for what I need in this particular room it doesn't matter too much.

Had fun putting them together.

so what if i had an amp that is 8 ohm and i put 16 ohm speakers on it, is more or less ohms better for power

You'll only get half of the maximum potential output power from the amp but no damage will be done to either the amp or speakers.
