Smoke from under bonnet drivers side but not overheating?!? any ideas

Hi all,

Have noticed this recently, especially after short journeys car tends to have steam/smoke coming from under the bonnet drivers side, however the temp needle stays firmly in the middle, does not raise etc.. i put some water in it just incase.. any ideas what the cause of this could be? i am aware that i do have a slight water leak from the water pump area could it be linked to this.. although saying that when watching the water levels the car drives perfectly on long journeys no faults.. its just done colchester to worthing yesterday.. any ideas what this may be.. help would be appreciated thanks

If you had to top it up then theres a leak, run it intill it leaks then find and fix it dude.

If there wasn;t a large amount of water lost it shouldn't over heat.

hi mate not really shore about yr problem but sure someone might be able to help, gather yr frm colchester????,myself and taff live there also, what motor u got bud,saw a white uk 300zx around straight road area, not sure if its a tt,hope u sort the problem out bud ;)

Im from Worthing, West Sussex, bought the zed from colchester though.... Update to the problem I've been driving it all day and its fine.. must have just been a bit low on water. There is a leak coming from the water pump area.. how much would it cost for a replacement waterpump or to fix this leak.. just need a rough idea

Steam or smoke mate? Water doesn't make smoke lol!

i topped up the oil once and spilt a little bit forgot about it and started the car a couple of days later, got smoke from the top of the engine for 20min unitil it had burnt off.

If it's leaking from the driver's side of the radiator it will be a crack, they grow weak then blow apart completely.

I've had two like that and it's a pain in the arse, totally useless design.

Take the pipe off and check for cracks

May not be related at all but I have had a similar problem for several months now. When stationary, smoke will start to come up from the front offside wheelarch and it is always worse if she has been driven a little harder than normal. Mine doesn't lose water or touch oil but I do have a power steering leak and I have put it down to fluid dripping onto the exhaust. Must get my act together and get under the car and try to fix it.

I had a similar problem and it was a seized air compressor, the belts were smoking! This caused the smoke to rise from the offside wheel arch... worth a look?

Remember that the stock water temp gauge in the Zed is pants...a little leak won't show up by way of a higher temp until its too late - the needle then rockets into the red in a very short time and i've you're not lucky the effects can be permanent.

I would check all your water hoses and the rad, including those little ones at the back of the block going to the heater matrix...these are on the drivers side.

Are there any hissing noises as soon as you turn the engine off?

no hissing noises at all and it only happens sometimes..you just see some whitish smoke.. might be steam i really don't know coming from the corner of the bonnet (drivers side), the car does have a slight water leak around the water pump area.. she has done 65 000 miles.. shes had the cambelt changed but not the water pump as of yet.. could this be my problem... how much would a new pump cost me roughly?... when driving the temp gauge stays on the halfway mark.. possibly 1mm above..,

Does the smoke come from the front or back of the bonnet? Have you had a look under there when its doing it to see which area its coming from? Have you tried to see what the smoke smells of?

Cheers,

Andy

opened it today.. its coming from the back of the engine.. i think i know what it is.. i have a small oil leak at the back of the engine, i believe its just the oil burning and giving off steam
