Rear Foglights.........Legal ?

Hi,

I'm purchasing a bodykit for my Z, but the rear bumper replacement does not have any fog lights in them. My orginal Z bumper does have rear fogs in them.

My question is, is it legal not to have any rear foglights ?

Will it pass the MOT if you have no rear foglights ?

I have heard that it is only a requirement that the rear fogs must be in working order IF you have them on your car.

Please help me on this one ! Thanks.

I have a fog light wired in the main light cluster. i.e. no horrible light bolted to the bottom of the car.

My car passed it's Mot last thursday. (With a slight comment that it wasn't the brightest) What the hell, it passed!!!

Simon,

How difficult is it to do this ?

Did you remove one of the reverse light bulbs and replace it with a red bulb ?

Your info is invaluable !!!

Cheers.

The way it works is to disconnect the 2 middle brake lights (out of the 4). Then run a cable through from a new fog-light switch (or from the front fog-light switch) and connect it to one of your disconnected brake lights (I think it has to be the driver's side light, but I'm not sure).

You now have a situation where when you press the brake pedal, the outer 2 lights come on. When you press the fog-light button, 1 of the 2 inner lights comes on.

The problem with this method is it means you get a warning light on the dash (and a click from a relay) every time you hit the brakes! This is because the resistance is now incorrect.

The way around this is to use some sort of relay. This would allow all 4 brake lights to work normally unless the fog-light button was depressed. In that case it would isolate the middle 2 bulbs from the braking circuit and keep them (or one of them) turned on all the time.

I've been meaning to sort out a relay circuit like the above for months and never got round to it, so if anyone works out how to do it, please let me know!

Hi Chaps,

I'm new here. I just bought a Metalic Sivler 92 Autobox non-turbo Jap Import. Not a scrap or scratch to be seen. I have noticed that it has had a rear fog like mod, there is a big red switch on the center console - took me a while to figure out what it was for actually. I think when it was shipped over it stopped off in Rotterdam, where they changed the speedo to Miles and put the fog light on it.

Cheers,

Alesi, Dave M is absolutely correct.

It is not a big job (Even tho I did not do it) When I bought the car they did it as part of the deal. The fog light switch is mounted out of the way on the far edge of the console near the drivers window. It lights up when it is on. As Dave says the sodding 'Lights' warning lamp flashes everytime you hit the brake pedal which is a pain in the neck.

The simplest solution is remove the warning bulb. I checked every sodding light on the back end befor coming up with the correct understanding of what was going on!

I think it is worth pointing out if you need headlamp bulbs for the jap imports you have to modify one from Halfords. Details on request.

If you ever need a bulb for a jap, simply remove it and scoot off to halfords and compare it to what they have. Works every time. (Avoid buying Allow tyre valve caps tho! ;-))

Simon.

Thanks for all the info on that.

One more question ! What about the Rear Light Panel replacement (from Paul Baileys) that replace all the tailights ?

Within these round tailights, they have 1 fog light on the right and 1 reverse light on the left in the tailights. Is this correct ? Has anyone fitted these to their Z ?

Alesi, the rear light conversion to which you refer is the Strosek light conversion which as you states replaces the whole light panel. It looks very good.

Refer to Bob as he fitted one to his and as you can see from 'Bob's Place' he knows his wires.

Not too sure if it includes a fog light. Mail Bob direct. His address will be in the post above.
