Just got off the phone from the dealer, reckons its not firing on 2 cylinders, says its not coil packs or whatever they are, theres a spark etc, he reckons next step is injectors? which means taking manifolds off etc bit of a job?

he hasnt hooked it to a conzult but reckons that wont tell you much anyway, theres no engine warning lights on or anything so he doubts it will tell him much.

has bassicly told me hes gonna look into the injectors and get back to me...

mean while im ****ed for a car as its my only car

I guess he has checked to see if there is a spark or fuel getting to these 2 cylinders???? still think its the PTU myself.

Make sure Plenum off is the very last thing you do. I did that and it turned out not to be the problem !

Hi mate, what dealer has your car? as Andy has said pulling the plenum off is a big job and I would only want it done as a last resort, my main thought is that when a PTU goes it can be intermittent, similar to when you described it misfired in the morning then was fine till later, also this could mean that when he tested for a spark it was there and possibly lead to him presuming that it must be fuel, hence I asked has he checked for both a spark and fuel.

Running conzult on it may not show anything up, but also it may show the exact problem and is a 10 minute job, I am guessing he doesnt have Conzult hence he said that.

Sorry, whats the PTU?

Its a dealer in norwich called WCS Repairs, he sells jap imports.

he doesnt have a conzult so i guess thats why he hasnt ran it

Its number 5 on this picture, simply unplug and plug in a known good one to see if it cures the problem, a lot easier than pullling the plenum off.

Second hand they are about £30 although it may well go again, much better to get a series 2 PTU which are much more reliable, there is one for sale on here for £100 and I think new they are around £150ish, are there any members in Norwich that will lend you theirs? its simply unplugs so very easy to try.

Ok just got off the phone from that guy.

aprently he thought about the PTU but he said somthing about he didnt know if that effects all cylinders? or both sides? I dunno what hes on about presumably the 2 cylinders which are out are different sides of the engine ?

Hes trying to get in touch with some guy in norwich who is aprently quite knoledgable in 300's and he can also get the parts off him..

But i didnt fully understand what he was talking about with the PTU

AndyZ is the person to talk to about trying a PTU, he is near Snetterton and will have second hand ones on the shelf ready to fit.

Is he about much?

ill phone the dealer back in the morning and tell him it could effect any ammount of cylinders on either side.

As ive just got off the phone suggesting the PTU i dont wanna phone ihm back straight away, so ill give him a bell in the morning

I had same trouble , turned out (after many hours and swear words!!!) to be broken wires at the plug connected to the injectors , could also be bad connections! some of mine were green looking!

start by checking & cleaning the connectors to the PTU, coil packs & injectors.

the injector connectors are very common in corroding & may need replacing.

coil pack connectors break & can cause misfires.

PTU's are a common failure & can affect or or 1 (or more) cyls

yeah all connectors have been checked and al have sparks i beleive, ill get him to check the PTU tommorow

If all have sparks then you need to think about injector connections, all the way back to the big blue plug on the ECU.

Nope, working PTU equals working sparks, although there can be intermittent problems, usually when hot. You really need a Consult run on it.

RIght just got off the phone again, he reckons hes got one of the 2 cylinders firing again by cleaning the connectors and fidling with it ?

so hes still looking at the other one? is he ****ing me about or are the connectors some times that dodgy ? hes already cleaned them once supposidly

A cheap emergency 100% good fix for really bad standard injector connections.

Cut the old ones off and push the electrical connectors out. Throw the connectors and save the plastic cover. Using some of the thinnest type speaker connectors make some new injector extension leads. Solder the leads to the cut ends of the injector wiring and insulate. Thread the new connections completely through the old plastic cover. Clean the pins on the injectors and using long nose pliers carefully reconnect the leads then slide the plastic cover down into its normal position. JOB DONE GOOD AS NEW CONNECTION
