Hi all, I am a new comer to the world of the Z car and bought my first car a couple of months ago. A 1990 Fairlady Non Turbo, Jap import.

 

First the power Steering pump went, now replaced.

Then the Charging light stayed on on the dash, checked the battery with engine running, only 11v.

I assumed the Alternator was going so bought A brand new one. Fitted it today and still the same problem, Charging light stays on and 11v at the battery.

 

Help please I am gutted!!!

hi mate . i have just had the same problem with mine . turned out to be alternator on mine though . have you tried putting a new earth wire from the battery to the engine . then see what the charge rate is . failing that try taking the battery light bulb out from the speedo .then check the charge rate . sounds silly taking the bulb out . i had a charge problem on a renault 5 gt turbo . took the bulb out charged fine put it back in wouldn't charge . turned out to be a faulty speedo track . hope this helps :duffer: :duffer: :duffer:

Check the fuse marked up "eng cont" in the black fuse / relay box under the bonnet on the passenger side inner wing, among other things this circuit controls the alternator charge switching.

Thanks Guys, tried all but still no joy! Charging light on and reading 11.9 v on meter.

hi mate . i know it's a pain in the arse to get to the alternator . but try linking the two wires in the plug together as both these wires should be live . this might kick the charging in . worth ago . no promises though :headvswal :headvswal

if the charging light is on then its probably either the alternator, or the voltage regulator. what does the battery voltage read when disconnected? if you disconnect the battery and its reading more than your 11.9 then its your chargining current which is sucking the battery down.

take the battery out, charge it over night and then give it 24 hours and test it , see if its a holding a charge, should be at least 12.5 volts. Under 12 and its definitely fekked.

I think your alternator is duff, yes i know its new but that doesnt mean its not duff.

I reckon you do infact have no voltage being supplied by the alternator and the 11.9 you are measuring is the battery voltage.

I have the same feeling, I am only praying it is not. I had a lot of trouble getting the alternator so I got it from US, and in the box is test result showing all OK. I know it could just be a standard print. I am just hoping it is something else and easy to sort. Will check Voltage without Battery conected & see what is happening. Thanks
