Hey everyone, got a lift home last night from the rac

ย

but its ok, the cars still in one piece, i just need to tighten the fan belt up (unless its stretched too much)

ย

Question is: How do i tighten it up?

Featured Replies

Depends which belt you mean?

ย

Power Steering belt is adjusted by adjusting the pump.

Compressor is adjusted by the idler pully.

Water Pump/Alternator is adjusted by moving the alternator.

the one arond the water pump, i need a new one of them. i know how to tighten/loosen that one, not sure about the others which im trying to take off now.

air con belt.. slacken 14mm nut on front of ajustment pully, directly underneath there is a 12mm bolt, you need to have the car up to see it properly. Undo until pully wheel moves up this will then loosen the belt and can be removed with ease, replace the same way making sure the belt has sufficant tension

ย

P.S belt.. loosen 12mm ajuster nut on front of bracket, turn the crank around via pully 27mm socket required! So you can see the 14mm bolt through the centre of the power steering pump just loosen this slightly, from underneath the car look up and you will see a 12mm ajuster bolt loosen this right off now squeeze belt so it loosens, it may be tight so a pry bar in between PS pump and power steering bracket to move pump over enough to remove belt.

ย

alternator.. underneath slacken 12mm nut on back of alternator bracket, top of alternator there is a 17mm bolt loosen but dont remove, now back at bottom of alternator there is again a 12mm bolt loosen off a fair bit and knock alternator over so there is enough room to remove belt

yeah, that helps thanx, can you take the fan off by just loosening those 4 nuts?

  • 2 weeks later...

I took the water pump wheel off to get at a bolt i dropped behind it. Now I cant get it back on so will have to loosen the alternater! :headvswal

ย

Can it all be done from the front with the rad etc out or will I have to jack the car up. I can see the very long bolt on the swing part of the alternater bracket but this is very loose already? What do I have to do to loosen it so I can put the belt back on?

ย

Thanks, Ed

ed- where you see the ajustment arm behind that is a 12mm nut which clamps the bracket to stop the bolt moving in/out you can do it on the floor, but i would use the oem scossor jack on the side to be able to get your arm in and around, you may well have to loosen the 17mm bolt that passes through the alternator at the top of it!

ย

dont un-do the 17mm to far otherwise the nut will fall off the back and you wont enjoy putting it back on

ย

refit is same as reverse, making sure you have a good tension on the belt, you should be able to just about move belt from side to side :)
