Anyone know where the crankshaft is supposed ta be when the timing tool is fitted?? The car came to me with a broken belt so I couldn't mark it with ref points. The tool would have me fit the belt with No 1 Cylinder at TDC and the valves open on the same cylinder "I don't think so" all the 16V engines are ment ta be the same and yes I do have the autodata info but it doesn't help

dunno on the 16v but on 8v lagunas the marks are on the belt!

took me an hour to find that out. lol

On the 8v engine there is a bung in the side of the block(gearbox end), you remove it and put in a dowel that locates and locks the crank, 16v may be the same.

Yeah it's the same I've got the proper tool for setting it up but it doesn't lock the crank and the belt being broken when I got it I could mark the pullys before removal what I really need to know is does the locking tool lock the engine with the crank at No 2 TDC as it looks like it might from the cam profiles.. but the valves are made out of such pish I'm scared ta even turn the motor over with a socket till I know where it's meant ta be.. I asked a Renault Mechanic today and he couldn't tell me... French S*** !!!!!

It locks at no1 TDC but no1 is flywheel end not gearbox end like you would expect.

Yeah I've heard this said but number one and four are at TDC with valves open ..

on any renault 16v youll find an e torx bung at the front of the block next to the cast web for the gearbox .youll need a pin that drops into a drilling in the crank.

Yeah I've got the renault locking tool but it's total *****x "locks the crank on webs" but still miles out in at least three places. "O" and did you know the camshafts have no woodruff or locking either.. God I hate french motors

Seem to remember it will also drop into the balancing holes on the web. There is only one that feels tight though which should be the right one.
