Can anyone recomend a decent battery that can be recharged please?

Will be running an alarm and audio set-up and as its a weekend/summer car it sits for a while before being driven about so might aswell get a decent one :)

Can they?

I thought some of the Lids are sealed so you cant top up the levels

you dont need to open the lids to recharge the battery - theyre just for topping up with deionised water when the cells run low - although ive never heard of car batteries that are sealed in this way.

if your battery is dying every day then check to see if there is enough water covering each cell, and check the charge of the battery itself with a meter. if the battery is dying then either the battery is knackered, or youve got a short in your car somewhere. i had a prob in my Cav where there were two alarms installed (one older one i didnt know about that had been deactivated) but were causing a short, and killing the battery every Saturday!

parasitic drain mate, do a search on parasitic drain for ways of finding it and how many amps of drain are ok, there is a way with a multimeter but its long winded

jsut go and buy a new battery, do the easiest thing first. Any car place will have them, halfords etc and get the highest current rating one that fits your car that you can. A bit of cold weather always highlights duff batteries so considering were in Winter my money is on your battery being duff. If you put you new battery in and its still going flat then either your alternator is duff(but then again the battery light would be illuminated on the dash if it was) or you have something sucking the juice down so you will have to investigate further using a multimeter.

boot compartment lights or glove compartment lights are a common cause ;)

A faulty switch will leave the damn things on all the time

Charge your old battery up, then whilst the car is running test it to make sure it is charging and you havnt got an alternator problem.

Also if you end up buying a new one, get a good one not a cheap one. and try and get a battery with the highest amph, for better cranking power

wasnt there a fad a few years ago with ultima red(yellow?)tops? as i recall they used gel instead of water and were guaranteed for an age. they were very popular with the max power brigade and there huge power sucking ice before power caps really came along. could be worth a look if you are going to have to replace anyway?

also if its a weekend car it may be worth getting an optimate (thats for bikes but i take it they would work on cars too) or the like. keeps the battery tip top and charged while you arent using the car and if you hard-wire it to a plug all you have to do is plug it in when not using the car.

works well on his zx10r.

Far cheaper going to a local auto spark or motor factor for a battery, just bought a new battery myself, nearly 30 quid cheaper than halfords.

even cheaper is to check the drain first to see if its too high if so then it doesnt matter what battery you get it will die
