Polished Bits

Hi!

Does anyone know what people use in their engine bays to make the steel bits stay shiny? e.g. balance tube, that's mild steel isn't it? Surely if its just polished it will rust. I was thinking of doing mine myself but am worried about them rusting. Are the ones that have been getting sold on here recently been chromed or coated in some way?

I'm just looking for some bits to do on my z to pass the time with while I wait for parts to fix it... (If anyone remembers, some idiots tried to nick it a while ago, they robbed my house and took my keys but luckily couldn't nick it because I'd broken the ECU before hand, hehe, I'm just glad they didn't have a tow truck.)

Thanks!

John

The Plenium chamber is made of Aluminium isnt it? You just polish out the bumps

That's gonna be a lot of polishing, heheh - should keep me busy for awhile :-)

I'm still stuck on the steel bits though... I came across something called diamond clear, which is a clear coat designed to be applied directly to bare metal which looks like it might work - it's supposed to uneffected by engine bay heat and oils/petrol. Might give it a try.

Ahhh. Wrong polishing me old mucka.

You need a polishing machine to do it or really big arms. biggrin.gif

My dad does up old motor bikes for a hobby and he has a 1hp polishing machine. He uses it to polish chrome exhausts, wheels and body parts. It can actually polish out deep scratches and small dents. He said if I wanted it doing, it would take a few days of polishing or about a week of he took his time. I may do it . It does look really good with it like that.

I use wire wool on my MG, it has a lot of chrome and that is the best stuff i have found to get any metal clean, then buff out with a metal polish and then give a light buffing with a soft cloth for the shine :O)

the light buffing with a soft cloth makes all the difference,

I was thinking you meant you wanted to get all the bumps out of the chamber. Just polishing it up to make it shiny? I used some metal polish and a tooth brush. It did make a difference. Planning to take it off soon and polishing mine to make it all SMOOTH and shiny only for it to get dirty a few days later. hehehe.

Is there any tech on here how to take off the plenum chamber? And maybe the head?

Stuart

Though Harve was polishing stuff, or did he get sick of it?

Hi JPH,

Most of the components are 'zintec' - the steel ones hot lacquer them when you've polished them.

As 'SRRAE' mentioned you will need a minimum of 1 hp machine & cutting soap to cut through the old green shite.

Then the polishing soaps to bring it up.

Please please, be careful! as there are many bits on parts that just love to get cought in mops if your not holding it tight enough - & if it comes out at 8500 rpm towards you - you will need more than 1st aid.

But the results look good smile.gif
