it is on my UK 1990 TT. There is one bulb (501?) that only lights up the up arrow on the drivers side drivers window switch. It seems a bit weird that it doesnt illuminate anything else but there is deffinetly a bulb there.

i did mean window when i said mirror. I will try and take some pictures to show you when i can. Could it be a UK only thing?

Well mines a UK car and deffo has a bulb. It had a blue cap which I have now removed

Hmmmmmm interesting!!

Mines a 92 JSpec and defo does not have one. The UK (On-Line) service manual does show a lamp in the main window switch, but both of my US Spec manuals defo don't show lamps

So it's on some but not all!

If it's one of these twist-in plastic bases, then it sounds like the cluster pods, which require a 5mm LED with a 470 Ohmm resistor, then soldered to the contacts. But a pic of one would confirm this for defo.

Daves Zed. it is a twist in one, will try and get a picture of it when i can. On what page of the UK online service manual does it show the bulb and where can i find this manual?

Also while we are on the subject i found another bulb in the wiper controls part of the cluster. It has a rectangular base rather than circular like the twist out ones and is a bu99er to get out which is why i cant tell you what size it looks like. Has anyone had any luck changing this one as i think it looks a bit odd that this is the only part of either cluster that isnt lit up??

It looks a little different to the instrument bulbs - very very flat base with a screw driver slot - instead of the more raised square base of the instrument bulbs. The bulb has a blue sleeve over it and it is directly underneath the "up" part of the drivers window switch.

The base looks like this one, but it has a 'normal' bulb, and the 'normal' contact to the PCB...

As for the wiper control, I did try this and wasnt successfull, so gave up. A small 3mm LED will fit, but it'll need a 470ohm resistor attaching to it, but the 'hole' is very restrictive and also the contact is touch only. So basically I found it not to be worth the effort the first time. But saying that I'm about to re-do all of mine again, so I might give it another attempt. ;)

Shouldn't be too much of a problem then, as posted yesterday, 5mm LED + 470ohm res should do it.

Let me know how you get on with the wiper controls bulb if you redo it. What do you mean when you say the contact is touch only?

Yeah will do, I should be re-doing mine next week, hopefully!

Touch only - Basically the LED is held in plce into a rubber bung, this is then pushed into the hole, and electrical contacts simply make contact by touch only, they are not clamped or forced together in any other way than just simply touching each other, bit of a crap idea. Anyway I'll see if it's possible to improve on this and will add it into the original post somehow if I'm succesfull. Watch this space ;)

It can be done but its a bitch to do, as a LED is very directional with its light output, you need to really remove the switch then the little panel with the wiper logo on it and feed the LED in from that end so it points towards you.
