grr, im typing this on my old PC. the PSU of my current PC just went pop!

noticed a toxic burning smell yesterday afternoon and managed to sniff it down to the PSU - specifically the rear of the PSU. noticed the fan wasnt rotating so switched it off and then went out for new years.

started her up today after tinkering a bit and the fan still wasnt going round (a 3-month-old Antec 500W!) so thought id just check my email and look at the website that i bought it off to try and sort a replacement when POP the thing died. im really hoping that the components survived (the trip box downstairs tripped out so hopefully that might have caught the surge before it did any more damage). ive got a £120 gfx card in, and there's the motherboard too :( i hope theyve made it.

i'll give the retailer (eBuyer) a ring tomorrow and see if i can sort something out. what a PITA

Oooooooooo I know that feeling and smell, I've had two goback in December :headvswal Fortunatley neither did any other damage

Ebuyer should sort you out though, they have always been good with what I've had from them.

Happy New Year bud.

get yourself a UPS aswell, i've got a 600W one from dabs.com to protect my pc (A watercooled and overclocked beast)

i rang them on Tuesday and they were fairly helpful, except for the bit where they said "you need to go online and fill in the return request form" and I said "lol how can i my PC exploded" (i didnt tell them i had to drag my old pc out of the cupboard - lucky i didnt sell it!) eventually i said ok i'll have to go to a friend's and get the form filled in. PSU was collected yesterday and will be tested hopefully by tomorrow. I was a little upset that they didnt send a replacement immediately. oh well, we'll see what happens next week. im still worried about my motherboard and GFX card :(

Hey Dave, make sure you get reciepts for all the postage and get them to pay you back.

yeah no problems there mate - they sorted the collection out for me ;)

try and make it if you can next Sunday buddy - not seen you for ages.

well the testers said that the part was faulty (i gathered that when it exploded). but theyve refunded me when i asked for a replacement. turns out the price of that part has jumped up £20 since i purchased it last year :nono: so ive gone for the next one up - a 550w. hopefully this one's a little more reliable.

Um, how would a UPS be any good whatsoever to protect from a PSU going pop? Please explain this one for me :duffer:

right the replacement is here now. im going to power this pc off - fit the replacement, and find out how much of my motherboard and gfx card are left :o wish me luck!

ok im back on my normal computer - the PSU is a bitch cos its got so many damn wires coming out of it that its like a plate of spaghetti inside the computer! the older PSU (that went bang!) was modular so you could only plug in the leads that you needed which was much better.

no melting smell coming from the psu which is good.

only problem is: i lost my mouse pointer! tried the mouse in each usb slot and although the mouse is 'there' on the screen, in that i can click and drag, i cant see the pointer. ive turned on pointer trails - i can see the trails but not the original pointer. also on startup the screen was full of white dashes - this leads me to believe a bit of damage has been done to the gfx card. im going to fire up a graphics-intensive game and see what happens. hmm....

ok it seems to be working ok now (touch wood - fingers crossed etc.) Oblivion worked fine, and after rebooting i got my mouse back  i think it'll take a while before i 'trust' it again :p

I didn't say it would stop the PSU from failing, But it can protect the computer through surge protection and can help prevent data corruption in the event of a power cut. My PC actually cost me more than my recent Z purchase so I am going to spend the extra £100 to protect it. (£550 on the watercooling, £330 on the graphics cards (3 of them), 6x 250Gb HDDs, 5.1 THX Surround Speakers etc...)

£100 for a UPS is a small price to pay after that lot

try here
