Unfortunately my cam belt broke on Xmas eve. Is there any chance that this would not have resulted in major engine damage?

Only way to tell is put a belt on it an do a compression test on the cylinders mate

What kind of RPM where you doing when it snapped? I would also get a compression test done.

There's been posts about this before and IIRC, if you have an auto you'll have more chance that you've done no damage ;)

Wish you luck :)

The VG30DE(TT) is quite a low tollerence engine whice means its possible damage can occure when the belt snaps, but i've heard conflicting stories when cam belts snap. Some i've heard have said they had no damage other's have said its done major damage. Read this. Good luck hope all is fine when you replace the belt

its normally speed dependant, as said the engine is close interferance so most likely bent valves in the process, if it happened at idle you may be lucky

just get a new cambelt on and compression test, TBH you will know if theres any serious damage as you may find one or more sprokets wont turn, which means valves are bent :(

One thing i noticed about these engines is the valve cams ususally spring to the closed possition so you may be lucky.

The cams 99% of the time settle "off lobe" so all valves are closed while the pistons continue to move up and down - therefore usually no damage occurs :)

ย

Unless the engine was revving highly then the cams would have enough inertia to come back on lobe and be out of sync with the crank as they do so - this would be the only case where a bent valve would be the outcome :)

Stick a belt on and do a compression test...
