Had my 93 N/A a week now, when i first fire her up and for the next 10/15 mins (seems to be mostly when just idling) there is a really strong smell of unburnt petrol inside the car.

once the cars warmed a bit and uve done a cpl of miles the smell seems to go?

I get that... but normally when i stick the heater or air con on.. a strong smell of petrol comes through... as soon as i switch it off - it fades..

anyway - cant help you out as I dont know what it is either .. sorry

broken seal between the downpipe and the cat back? I have a gap there and it always leaks petrol vapours into the cabin (being fixed tomorrow). Maybe worth get the gasket inspected/replaced?

It happens more when it's cold weather. You need to tighten up all your fuel hoses which are under the cam covers etc. There is a thread on here somewhere with a diagram to show you where they all are.

take off those big banana boots then

Seiously though, if you can smell petrol, get it checked ASSAP or you could end up on fire.

Check all your fuel hoses! The metal clips might need tightening (you need to remove the central cover to get at them all) or the hoses themselves might need replacing. Consider how old your car is and, after all the time and temperature changes it's seen, how the rubber will have turned brittle and perished. Also see here: http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnettech/fuelleaks/fuelleaks.html

The smell of petrol in the cabin should never be ignored. Do so at your own risk!

Just phoned the dealer (still under warranty) he told me to look under the bonnet and see if theres any leaks, doing so i cant see any leaks under there its bone dry, he reckons its just a cold start thing probably but said to take it to him after crimbo and he will look at it..

could it be nothing at all? or does it have to be somthing to be smelling

Im going to get it checked out over the holidays when i got a few days off.....

I used to have a strong smell of petrol when i first got my zed... quite a common problem apparently, most people recommend getting new fuel lines.

I didn't think it was the fuel lines as it was fairly young zed (sept. 96). Two or three tanks of Optimax sorted it out, smell never came back.

One of Smithys fuel line kits is the best way to go

Fuel Line Kit

There are numerous fuel lines that cross the plenum and this kit reduces the number right down to just 4 connections. With fuel smells being quite common and the stock lines being old and brittle, upgrading to this full kit not only looks good but also serves a purposee cut to the exact length and hose ends already fitted. The kit comprises of 2 lengths of high pressure pre braided hose, 4 ends, 2 Rubber lined stainless P-clips and an Anodised silver hose seperator. Fits all models of TT and N/A.

Anodised Red or Blue £65 ENH010

Chrome £68 ENH011

had the same problem, stank of petrol on start up,and was drinkin loads of fuel, was the fuel hoses at the bak of the plenum, replaced both sides and the clips, now no smell, better mpg so happier all round :)

I had that. Replaces all teh hoses adn it was a leaking fuel injector connection, also had the small bit of hose in the middle of te engine perferate adn leak, Mr Smithy to the rescue on both occasions.

Fuel line kit he has IMO is the most important mod on the car.

Next to a bit of wire to stop teh throttle from fowling teh PCV

just a quickie tho, its not gonna bae dangeous to drive it for the next few days or however long it takes to get the kit is it?

Hi,

I recently had the same fuel smell and tightened all the connectors under the plastic throttle cover.

Fuel was spraying up onto the fuel regulator from the joint underneath. Now tightened and no more leak or smell!

Any fuel smell is potentially dangerous, many people have had the problem without the car going up in smoke BUT .........

its unlikely to ignite, but I wouldn't want to be the one to test out that theory. Replace all the pipes, the problem on mine was one of the pipes above the no.5 injector had an inch long split in it. Not long after that, that injector gave up because of the corrosion in the connector, presumably because of the fuel leak.

It's probably the one under the Fuel Pressure Regulator. It is a very small hose right under the FPR feeding down to the fuel injector rail. It is pretty hard to get at - you have to take off the trim over the throttle cables to see it and its quite hard to get a screwdriver near. You'll be amazed at how much fuel is pissing out down the back of the engine !

do the talc test, b4 you start it from cold remove central cover u will see the hoses , sprinkle with talc, dont forget the awkward hose below throttle cable (bit hard to see) also to the right of battery u have a fuel meter there do same, start engine u will see any leaking fuel tighten jubilee clips job done
