I've got a little networking problem, that I'm hopeing one of you techy types might be able to help me with :D

Right I have a Netgear WGT624 that is supposed to work at upto 108Mbps. For this I'm using a Belkin G+ Notebook Card for my lappy, and a hard wire for my main PC.

Right, the question.... I only seem to get, at best, 54 Mbps on my lappy. In fact tonight I was only getting 36 Mbps. Now I can take the lappy right upto the wireless router and it makes no difference

Any ideas?

Sounds like you have an option set wrong on the router. You can change the speed on there. May be worth checking out the wireless mode on the router.

I would help more but i'm just on the way out for the night. I'll check in later matey

Right, on checking the settings of the router I'm in AUTO 108Mbps mode. I changed it to 108 Mbps mode ONLY and a little warning came up saying, that I must have ONLY equipment that displays the 108 symbol on it. Well, I thought, my network card has 125 Mbps written on it, so it should be OK!!!! :D............ NO!! :( The network doesn't even show up! So I've put it back to AUTO 108 mode and it's working at around 48 Mbps at the moment. Anyway, when I move into my new place, I'll be using the Orange broadband system with their Live Box wireless router, so we'll see how that goes ;)

A lot of these high speed modes are specific to individual manufacturers and not true industry standards.

Might be that the network card doesn't support the 108Mbps mode so is dropping back to the 54Mbps mode that they both support.

You very rarely get the full speed either just to make things worse due to distance and interference from other radio devices.

Also check you haven't got another wireless device that's dragging it down to the low speed. As your router told you, in many devices they all have to be running at high speed or it reverts back to low speed.

You'll probably have to change the router or card to the same brand and speed rating but check the settings on both and refer to the manuals for what modes they support.

I do have the Belkin 125Mbps modem/router to go with the network card, but since I've been here at my dads house I've had to use the Netgear router because he's got NTL, and they supply there own special modem

The question is, does it really matter ? You won't have 54Mb from your Internet connection so unless you are copying big files between the laptop and desktop then you won't need the bandwidth. And if you do need to copy a huge amount in a short period of time then you could always connect the laptop via a cable to the switch.

what chris said... the only ratified standards are 802.11/a/b/g (and soon to come n)

As Andy said, you'll only be getting 1-8meg (or maybe a bit more if its cable) from your internet connection so it makes little difference anyhow.

Also I might add, that most will only support the full 108mb if the card and router are the same make. Most also will only work at full speed if the network is all the same, ie, doesn't have a mix of different wireless modes.

This could also be effected by other wireless routers in the area using the same or channel which is close.

But as said before, you wont need full 108 speed for internet. And if you are transfering a large amount of data over a network, I suggest you plug it in via ethernet cable and doing it that way. MUCH faster than wireless.

House grade wireless is still only good enough for internet use.

Cheers guys, appreciated :)

Wireless mode is only on the lappy anyway, as my main PC is hard wired and that's what I do most stuff on. I'll have to see how my new place works with the wireless. I've also just enabled the 128 bit WEP security properly :x:

What key did you use? I can check it's secure if you like ;)

I'm not very clued up on all this computer stuff.... does something need a good scrub with a stiff brush and some dettol? Probably best do all the parts mentioned then dry them in the airing cupboard.

Nothing to stop you connecting the belkin router into the netgear and having them both on the same network. Then you could connect wifi to the belkin and have 100mbps tranfer rate to the other pc.

You would just need to turn dhcp off on the belkin and set the same ip range as the netgear. The laptop would still get an ip address from the dhcp server on the netgear via the belkin.

not much point tho unless you are file sharing

By the way chris is right. 108 and 125mbps are not ieee standards yet so you need the same hardware at both ends. Same with netgear rangemax stuff as well etc.

Hi Stuart - As you are not a subscribed member I have not been able to pm you to ask if you would please send me the £41 balance on the indiglo dials. Please also send me your name and address so the dials can be sent to you.

Please understand that you are preventing ALL the members of the group-buy from receiving their dials as MyGarage has to receive full payment for all of the dials before they will send any of them out.

SO PLEASE SEND THE £41 WITH YOUR NAME & ADDRESS VERY URGENTLY.

Cheers - Dave
