I want an El Camino

I've been yerning for one of these for years and years now. Mid 80s one too. I know a lot on here write off the idea of having a Yank car, but I love them. Was originally (and still would have had one if I could have found a good one) going to get Z28 Gen 4 Camaro instead of the Z. Really fond of my Yank-mobiles. I don't care that they don't handle very well as I never race my cars.

Wanting a Chevrolet El Camino pickup now. Would drop in an LT1 EFi unit from an old Corvette and bolt on a nice big whipple supercharger, paint it yellow and fit some retro chrome rims.

Bit like this thing. Not everyone's cup of tea, but something I really really want.

Still might do it one day funds permitting. Wanting an old school resto-job to do. :)

What you want is an el camino ss I think it has the 454 big block chevy engine and about 400 horsepower.

Yeah, those are nice, were nicknamed 'cho choo' for some silly reason....must have been because they pull like a steam train I guess. But prefer the more retro front of the lesser models.

I've always been open about my passion for yank tanks. :)

Used to go to Americana with some of the guys from AACINT. Was always a cracking good show.

  another closset yank lover in the camp hey Si

Hmmmmmm the words Closset and Camp mentioned in the same sentance, AND associated with FunkySi

Si,

Really wish your knowledge of yanks included a how to diagnose a non-trouble code, non fuel related, non ignition related, non alarm or immobiliser related how to start problem !!

Had various yanks since I was 21 and I am now 44 and still cant get this damn thing to start !!

Replaced just about everything except the wing mirrors !! :)

Old C4 Vette that just wont give me a break ! Will get there tho.

You do have nice taste my friend, both Z`s and Yanks.

Cheers Alan.

You have a 'vette?? Good man. C4s were nice. It was those diamond cut 'dog-leg' rims that did it for me....fitted to the 92 (I think) onwards.

I briefly had a butchers at a few of those. A red and a white one. The white one had lurid red interior unfortunately.

Have you ever used the digital corvettes website? There's a good mech/elec forum on there.

Nope !! :(

Car came from Talahassie, and then torn to bits over here.

After the guy who imported it, stripped it, and done some of the work he took a heart attack and was left paralysed. Car sat for 2 years and the family sold it on.

I bought it in bits !! :xxx:

Top half of engine in the boot (trunk) etc, etc.

New g/box and o/d unit, its a 4 speed manual with a overdrive unit = 6 speed.

New bottom end, rings, crank etc.

Had it running, and did 22 miles in total. Enough for the mot to get it registered in this country, but it still didnt feel right.

Long story short, turned out to be a duff injector.

Fitted with Bosch needle point, which werent the best apparently ! :(

A new set of 24lb Delco`s from the states later and she is almost there.

There is a 9th injector which controls the cold start, or choke if you like.

Here in lies the problem !! :(

On the case as we speak, but will get there. Always do. :)

Hi Si,

Unfortunately, mines is an older 85, which had those older style of wheels, which were a bit like a Matchbox Superfast style !

Mines is red (surprise) with a light tan interior.

Will have a browse through that website and have a look.

Could bore you to death with loads of before and after pics, but this is a Zed forum after all ! Wouldnt want to offend anyone !! :)

Looking lovely now Alan. Very very nice. Although I think I would have done the B-pillar/roll bar black to match the roof capping.

Actually tried a black bin bag over it to see how it would look, but it seems kinda strange !

Once she is on the road, will get all that kinda stuff sorted.

Probably just a stupid wee thing that I have overlooked, but will get it sussed, eventually.

Yanks ??? Who would have em, eh ?

Alan........

You gonna stick with the current rims or get the newer ones? I like both BTW.

Hard to explain this but, will try my best.

80`s Yank meets modern type wheels ??

I think this combination works well ! :)

I am weird though !! :p
