 :hurl: well it happened. the big ends have gone.....shit

well at least its when i was taking her off the road for the winter. just phoned cleasbys up to price the new shells and he reckons he can get them for around 35ish. i am gonna have a go at putting a set in while engine is still in.anybody done this??? if so what should i do and not do. any info would be cool.

i know that some of you will recommend that i take the engine out and spend a zillion pound reconditioning it, but as xmas is looming ever so close, and the lack of large amounts of cash, this is not a valid option. my other option of putting a low milage replacement in is probs the best alternative. i,ll try the cheap option first then see how it goes

thoughts???

if your taking the car off the road over the winter why dont you just take the engine out and do front and rear crank case oil seals, recon tubs etc etc and anything else that you can do while engine is out it will save you a lot of grief in the long run, prevention is better than cure :)

99% of the time the crank will be damaged and need polishing/grinding so replacement in the car is certainly NOT recommended. I know of a trader who 'specialised' in this procedure and had just about every job back because of this :(

dgsignmakers, I have done both (engine removal & bigends with engine in the car), the main thing is only you know how long you have been driving the car with the big ends rumbling, if they have been on there way out for some time then don't do it in the car because you will have to take the crank out and get it reground, that's easier with the lump out ? But taking the engine out ain't that bad its just fiddly for the first time, but when the engine is out there are loads of things you can do that don't cost a penny just your time, plenum water bypass, egr removal, aircon removal, the list goes on....plus lots of cleaning. pm me if you want more info

Are you from Hetton?

Is your car the standard red TT with after market wheels, that's normally parked on the main road (Houghton Road)?
