Its spose to be a 3.1ltr

With:

JE pistons

Knife edge crank

Carillo rods

Here are some pics of the crank. Not really knife edge is it?!?!

I've also measured the piston bore and its 87.4mm. Would that make it a 3.1ltr? I've had a look at the online manual but cant work out the standard piston size.

Not sure on the rods. They are still in. Wasnt planning on taking them out.

That crank looks like a normal stock crank.

No, stock pistons are 87.4-87.5mm or somewhere around that area....

I used 89mm forged pistons

So I've got a completely standard engine then!?!?!?!?!?

Unfortunately, it sounds like it. I can't tell too much from the pictures though. Do you have any pictures of the block?? Did you take out the bearing and rods and look at them??

I've only taken the heads off and sump.

I was hoping it was going to be what I bought it was, but sadly doesnt look like it so far.

Looks more like they just dropped another lump in.

What do you want pics of? Will he tops of the pistons tell anything?

Could you have normal size forged piston? or would they always be bigger. When I start the engine I get a slight knocking till its warmed up, told its cause of forged pistons.

Looks like a metal head gasket too.

Its def had some work done to it, but not what it was sold to me as.

I just wanted a better look at the block.

Did the person you bought it from claim that it was a 3.1L??

Yup. It was claimed as 3.1ltr and uprated internals. knife edge crank, rods, pistons.

Ill go take more photos.

Yes, you can have stock forged pistons. There should not be any knocking. To have a stroked motor you will always have overbore pistons.

The headgaskets for the Z32 are metal.

stock pistons are 87mm arnt they?? it would be running at least 87.5mm if it had forged pistons as it would need to be rebored so they may be 87.5mm forged pistons?? difficult to tell, have a look at the pistons and see if theres a nissan logo stamped in them as the stock pistons have that.

the crank looks standard to me

no there not there normal head gaskets and you often get a little piston slap with forged until they warm up!!

also just looked up and je only make a piston for the 300zx in 87.5mm so its possible that they are in there ;)

But its still not a 3.1ltr is it? unless the stroke has been lenghtend?

87.5mm would make it about 3050 ish, you can work it out exactly but i cant be arsed  but its slightly over bored mate but not quite a 3.1!! i just rebuilt an engine for paul300zx and his had 88mm which takes it to just uner 3.1 :)

Even if they are 87.5mm forged pistons that is still not a 3.1L stroked motor.

I have 89mm forged pistons, no knock. What is the stock headgasket made of??

its just a stock paper gasket like on most other cars, tbh its good for decent power anyway

Here are some pics of it all. Also put some of my turbos. These are spose to be standard with 360degree bearings. They look clean, were done 5 years ago.

i think you guys are also getting confused with stroking an engine (and not in a sexual way LOL) the stroke is not the bore ie capacity its how far the crank pulls the piston/rod down ie the crank so to stroke an engine you would need a special stroker crank ie a jun one or a custom one. I was running a 3.2 on my old zed using 90mm greddy pistons but it was still running a standard stoke on a standard crank.

all of the above may be shite but its what i understand to be right :)

Mine were metal when I took off the head for the first time. In my rebuild I used the Nismo metal head gaskets.

someone must have put them on before hand then ;) i used the greddy ones and lately the Z1 ones

No, you are right, I was just reffering to the pistons.

Oh, I was not thinking :slap: you have a TT. I was thinking you had a non-turbo. I was looking at the pistons and they looked totally different. :slap: Sorry

Well, it looks like the crank is stock. Are you doing a rebuild??

the problem is its always difficult to prove cetain things like a knife edge crank, it could have just been reground and balanced? tbh knifeedging a zed crank doesnt gain you anything really so i wouldnt worry too much about that, if you measure 87.5ish for the bore than there not standard pistons so it does ring true that there JE as they are 87.5mm :) not sure about the racing tuned bit??? turbos do look in good nick but again without cracking them open you wont know!!

Does look like a metal HG as well so alot has been done to it :)
